will apply for spouse visa, can I leave country once filed?

Submitted the application for Koseki tohon, will apply for spouse visa next week. Ive been in Japan for about 4 months on an extended visitors visa. Under the circumstances these days, can I leave Japan and come back while waiting for the spousal visa to be approved? Whats the wait time on average? My visa expires in a month.

No if you leave Japan your visa becomes invalid and you have to apply again when you get back to Japan. Visas can take anywhere from 1 week to months. I suggest you go to immigration and ask about the status of the visa, and remind them your visa is expiring.
