Tokyo indie publisher: scouting for English-language authors in Japan

Shmuel Barber

I'd like to use my first post to introduce myself and ask 'Are there any authors out there in Tokyo?'

I am a Brighton-born author and the founder of Pynewood Press, recently relocated to Tokyo. My journey in Japan is fueled by a mission to bridge the gap between the visceral, high-stakes energy of the London indie scene and the deep, atmospheric literary world of Tokyo. I am living in Japan to immerse myself in its unique creative energy while continuing to operate Pynewood Press as an international imprint. I’m always looking to connect with fellow authors, editors, and literary enthusiasts in the Kanto area who are interested in pushing the boundaries of fiction. Whether you are looking for a publisher who 'gets' the expat experience or just want to discuss the future of the English-language book in Japan over a coffee, feel free to reach out.

As an author, my work, most recently The Massage of Erasure, explores the 'metaphysical absurdism' of the human condition. As a publisher, I’ve built the infrastructure to ensure independent voices aren't just heard, but are professionally distributed globally via Gardners and Ingram.

Hey there, would be good to pick your brains about how to make connections here. Do you mind if I message you?
