Art and culture in Indonesia

Many will be aware of Indonesia's vast range of local cultures, but few will be aware Indonesia has a position in the international art world.
As a start to this thread I wish to make readers aware of an upcoming event in Jakarta I'll be visitingĀ at some point over the next few days.

August 25 - 28 2016
The 8th Edition of The First & The Biggest Art Fair in Indonesia,
Bazaar Art Jakarta 2016
At The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place
Apart from the venue being an excellent place with very nice food, the event should be very interesting.

I very strongly recommend this as a must for anyone with even the slightest interest in art.
The organisers have done a terrific job, making me see why this is the premier international art event in Indonesia.
The first two hours flew by as I wandered around the stands, looking at a wide variety of wonderful works and chatting with artists. I was only there four hours as time was an issue for a couple of friends I went with, but I could have spent two days in there and still not done everything I wanted.
A great afternoon and evening.
These are always under the walkways to the south of the old town, Jakarta.

Advertising is for other people, but they seem to manage to make a crust.

The menu looked pretty good and the coffee was excellent. I don't go that way very much but I'll try lunch there next time I pass.
The lady who I think owned the place could speak English and seemed to be able to speak Japanese as well.
It was a very pleasant and relaxing sit down away from the hustle and bustle of Jakarta.

Last year's was nothing short of fantastic and I'm told this one is going to be even better.

Bazaar Art Jakarta is set to return for the ninth time under a new name, the Art Jakarta 2017, at The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, Pacific Place shopping mall in South Jakarta from July 27 to 30.
Art enthusiasts can expect to see a plethora of local and overseas artwork from Indonesian and foreign galleries, including from Singapore, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Spain, Thailand, China and France. Among the featured artwork will be those created by Richard Winler, Arifin Neif, Lugas Syllabus, Laksamana Ryo, Putu Sutawaijaya, Masayoshi Nojo, David Gerstein, Zhu Jinshi, Chun Kwang Young, Jean Franncois Rauzier and more.
I arrived at about 4.30pm and spent hours in the place, only leaving after 10 because I was getting very tired and my wife would have changed the locks if I'd been out much later.
Words like, "terrific", "wonderful" and "great" bounce around my thoughts as I recall the hours I spent there.
The event organisers were clearly very good at their jobs and the artists were way beyond interesting.
The beauty of the VIP day is there are less people around so you get more chances to chat to the artists - a serious bonus.
This is not a "If I'm passing" sort of event, this is a "Make sure you see it" job.
FANTASTIC!!!!!!!

(9/10/2017) Bali mourns the loss of one of its most illustrious sons with the death of I Nyoman Gunarsa.
A tireless promoter of Balinese art, Gunarsa received his formal training at the Academy of Indonesian Fine Arts (ASRI) in Yogyakarta where he also later taught. His paintings form part of important private and museum collections around the globe and are also prominently featured at Museum Seni Lukis Kontemporer in Klungkung that Gunarsa founded in 1989
As you point out, Indonesia has lost one of its greatest artists.Ā He will be missed.Ā

Can't forget to snap any passing artists

After many years of thinking art just was rubbish scribbled for idiots with too much cash to pretend to like, I realised art varies from the terrible to the fantastic, but my art teacher was a prat.

It's nice to see that you are interested in art.
I am a sculptor and I make paintings too.
I'd like to plan a sculpture exhibition in jakarta but still don't know where.
I don't want to make it in a gallery because they usually ask for a certain style of work and new pieces as my sculptures that I'd like to show are, eventhough they are modern, but in a several styles and old pieces.
I prefer to make it in a place where the expat are because in my opinion they are having more appreciation in art. It could be in a restaurant/cafe or any place where the expats gather.
I'd to ask whether you can give me a suggestion or recomendatio to manifest this plan.
Btw, I teach art too.
Thank you
Hanung Mahadi
Nb: I want to show you some photos of my works but I don't know how to enter the URL

Sorry I had to remove your post for editing, but it will reappear as soon as the contact details are edited out.
There are spaces in Jakarta that have been known to host less formal exhibitions one being near Old town.
Problem there is 3 flights of stairs and no lift.
