But if you worry about losing on city life, rest assured that the continent is full of modern and dynamic cities that all come together in a report published by the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne.

Marrakech, one of the biggest Moroccan cities, seems to be the best African city recognised for its quality of life according to the Federal Polytechnic School of Lausanne. Johannesburg comes after in the ranking, followed by Alexandria, Port Louis, and Casablanca. Tunis, Cairo, Rabat, Cape Town, and Fes are also featured in the top 10 African cities to live in.

Some 100 cities have been ranked on different aspects, such as infrastructure, environment and ecology, economy and governance, society, habitat, and social development. These factors combined give an overview of the quality of life in African cities. The best cities are praised for their investments in infrastructure, urbanisation, and housing for their population.

Marrakech

Marrakech

Marrakech has always been one of expatriates' most favourite destination in North Africa. Its pleasant climate, with the sea close by, and the affordable cost of living have been attracting both young people and expat retirees. In Marrakech, you will enjoy most of the Western comfort as per the standards back home, not to mention a more pleasant and laidback lifestyle along with a vibrant cultural life. Most people in Marrakech speak French, and many of them are bilingual. You will also discover a great historical heritage and enjoy various activities and cultural events all year round.

Johannesburg

Johannesburg

With over four million inhabitants, Johannesburg is the second biggest African city and has been attracting more and more expatriates over the years. The city is affectionately called “Jozi” by its inhabitants, and regardless of your plans, Jozi will take you on a unique and very diverse adventure. It's the ideal place to start exploring the country's different cultures and ethnic groups —unfortunately, the gap between the rich and the poor is still obvious. Yet, you are likely to meet people from various origins and backgrounds, who speak different languages. However, you will be just fine with your English language skills. Johannesburg is a fast-growth city that is open to investment and international professionals.

Alexandria

Alexandria

Cradle of one of the most ancient civilisations, the land of Pharaohs takes the third place in this ranking thanks to the historic city of Alexandria. Nicknamed the “Pearl of the Mediterranean”, Alexandria is the second Egyptian city by order of importance. One of the best things about living in Alexandria is its pleasant climate, proximity to the sea, and quality of life. Located at the crossroads of the history and culture of both North Africa and the Middle East, it's a cosmopolitan city that attracts international businesses, tourists, and young expats. If you are looking for an authentic way to merge into the Mediterranean culture, moving to Alexandria might be a once in a lifetime experience.

Port Louis

Port Louis

Port Louis, the Mauritian capital city, is a living symbol of the French colonial era. By strolling along its streets — from the maritime port to the surrounding mountain range — you will come across many historic buildings and monuments, as well as folk fairs. Port Louis is also a major economic centre, located at the crossroads of Africa and Asia. Over the years, Port Louis has developed into a modern urban area — hosting the country's official buildings along with big and small local and foreign companies. The capital of the “Star and Key of the Indian Ocean” is also lauded for its warm, dynamic, multicultural, and bilingual people. Despite its size compared to other African cities, Port Louis remains a reference regarding culture and low cost of living, while the island as a whole is known for the good quality of life.

Casablanca

Casablanca

With over four million inhabitants, Casablanca is one of the biggest metropolia of the Maghreb region, and the largest city in Morocco. As a major economic hub, it has been attracting many expatriates from all around the world. Its pleasant climate, beautiful beaches and urban dynamism will not fail to seduce you. Over the years, Casablanca has turned into a modern and vibrant city offering a lively nightlife to its inhabitants and a contemporary Western lifestyle alongside its amazing architecture and immense cultural heritage. The affordable cost of living and the variety of entertainment available are also good reasons for moving to Casablanca. In fact, for its inhabitants, Casablanca represents a city of the future as it is constantly renewing itself.
