Advice For Our Move To Mauritius

Good afternoon!

We were supposed to move to Mauritius last year but, as is probably the case with most people, this has been delayed. We are now hoping to make the move in September 2021.

I was hoping that I may be able to receive some advice please on what to definitely pack, possibly consider and totally not needed. We have two older teenage children so younger toys not necessary but sports kit may be recommended?

We will be coming from the UK. We were living in mainland Africa until last year. We are hoping to find a furnished home but I have read mixed reports about the standard of furniture. (We have two older teenage children so younger toys not necessary).

Bedding: what size are the beds there compared to the UK dimensions (King bed here is 150x200cm)? Would we need thicker duvets (assuming there is air-con) or should we be bringing our lighter, 4.5tog duvets and some throws?
What about garden furniture/equipment?
All kitchen items I presume would be recommended?
Do most people use gas BBQ's (gas easy to source?) or charcoal?

Any and all suggestions gratefully received so that we can pack effectively and only bring what we need! I know it gets humid in the summer but also cooler and breezier in the winter plus not sure if air-con is generally in all the houses. We are an active family so would want to be out and about lots.

Very many thanks for all thoughts,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, the Best advise what I can give you, book an apartment for 2 weeks lets say in the West and move arround and see Houses and Bungalows. I would not suggest you to book via Internet a long term contract without to have the possibility to check all, Furnitures, exact Location, for example Tamarin is not everywhere Tamarin, same Flic en Flac or Trou aux Biches , some areas louder than others. Wish you all the Best.

Thank you so much for your reply. This is our current plan so that we would know what our new home would look like and contain before we ship our things across.

It would be useful though to know of key items to consider packing ahead of that time so that we can have our boxes in order. We have time available at the moment to be sorting through our belongings so we are beginning to separate the piles and boxes into 'take' or 'store'.

Just really hoping that we will be able to make the move in September without further worries in either country.

Hi Lisa, we in similar position as you are , moving over in December this year with one teenager.  Speaking to mates who live there and moved there ex South Africa with a young child - she said to bring clothes for the kids - every day wear that is in expensive like Mr Price in SA - this appears to be lacking on the island and all costs more than what we are used to in Africa - t shirts and shorts etc.  Bedding if you like your own style and qualitiy - sheets and pillow cases for example.  Otherwise I got the impression the furnished homes have all you need.  My two cents on the subject :)  Natasha

Hello everyone,

Found this very interesting post you might want to read : https://www.expat.com/forum/viewtopic.p … 36#3282076

@ Lisa, What sport do they enjoy/pratice ?

A Decathlon store should open soon (the opening was due beginning April but has been delayed). It will be at Bagatelle, Moka. I think you will find all sport equipment there.

King bed here is 180x200 cm
Queen bed 150x200 cm

I don't think you will need thick duvet.

If you have your own garden furniture/equipment you want to bring along, sure why not. However, they are also available locally either in specialised shops or in various classifieds (expats leaving the island often try to sell their furniture etc.)

As for BBQ grill, people use both and you will easily find gas or charcoal if you need. The most common tends to be charcoal grill though perhaps because it is cheaper than the gas BBQ grill.

Most houses are equipped with air-con, if not we use fans.

(In between high grounds and coastal region right now at 21:17 temp 26°C, light showers, humidity is 84%  - Indoor it feels like 30+ degrees. I suppose that along the coastal regions West and North likewise, it should feel hotter, an air-con is nearly a must in some regions)

Regards and all the very best,
Anoushka

Thank you to tashwilmot and anou86 for your thoughts also.

A range of clothes is a good idea, same as previous location, we could buy but not a great choice and cost more.

Sports wise - all! Decathlon would be fabulous. We had a store newly opened in ur last place and it made all the difference!

All the other suggestions are really helpful, thank you Anoushka. It just allows me to judge what is available and also what is most needed. Good to know about the air con and temperature guidance.

Thank you to you both for your time and thoughts,
Lisa

Branded clothes can bit a bit expensive. But if you are looking for everyday clothes, local brand are at a decent prices.
And furniture wise, you can have imported or sometimes local options which are quite  pricey but generally speaking of good quality.

Thank you, @annabellesmile for your thoughts. All really helpful as we finish clearing through everything here ahead of the move!

I was also supposed to move in 2020 but delayed due to covid and border closures. I'm in South Africa.
I can't help with suggestions on housing etc as I'm still hoping to get over to the island soon to look for a house to buy.
A great site to look for a place to rent/buy is https://www.lexpressproperty.com/en/
Hope that helps 😊

can anyone help with any job openings in Mauritius
I'm a hotel management graduate from India  with 5 months internship experience in Mauritius with tui sensimar lagoon
thank you

95% hotels are closed due to lockdown and borders closed since 1 year.

There are no hotel job vacancies. No need to come to Mauritius.
