Check on the likely pollution tax ,that car may not be euro 3 or 4 spec if its not even a Lupo could cost you a fortune more probably than it worth, might be better to leave it on UK plates just make sure its taxed and insured.

Hi - thanks for the replies - how do I check the pollution tax? I've never hear of that is it a European wide thing or just Romanian

l1ndon

also its just over 10 years old, which might be a problem from what I'm reading?

Someone told me there is a website where you can check the cost of registering in Romania - or does anyone know how else to find out?

thanks

Hi, I can try to help.

1/ this is the website http://www.taxapoluare.com/calculator-taxa.htm

2/ uk cars did not have a euro rating when your car was made. it was deemed impractical & confusing & actually, not a quantative means of comparing one car to another, so we opted for a more accurate system using mass of particles per unit of fuel. However, cars sold in europe, not uk, have a euro rating. Thus, you need to google your model or better, call a VW dealer to ask them what your euro rating is, from the vin number. Slight changes within a model year may render your car one rating or another, so dont ask a bloke in a pub. Normally, major changes in such a thing as euro ratings are reserved for major model changes, so you should be fine, but some manufacturers 'blend'in an emissions improvement, so that an october car might be euro 3 & a November car a euro stage 4 for example. Thus, a dealer will tell you exactly. You might need their backing when proving what stage or classification you have.

3/ why are you registering the car here? I have 4 cars from the uk & I have left them uk registered.  You need to declare SORN each year or write & tell them its going to be long term until further notice & they will permanently sorn your car. Then use a company such as NFU to insure with as they give oyu a years green card.  Only thing missing is the mot. Drop me a line for more info on that.

PS, don't beleive any information emitted from the depart of rumours & opinions. UK right hand drive cars can be registerd in romania.

Many people will inaccurately tell you it cannot be done, such is the stigma of right hookers. You will probably have noticed the astonishment people have, police incliuded, at your apartment incredible skills at being able to operate such an alien machine.

Thanks so much for that info :D- I think I'll keep it UK registered like you suggest

I tried to get a quote from NFU but they said I have to have a mortage or bank account with them - but that was from a local branch so maybe its different online- havent had any luck with that though - did you get yours online?

I did get a quote from Stewart Collins though which I might take up - its not cheap but they seem to be the only other one.

Anyway, I seem to finding my way now - thanks once again

whitemountainproperty

that response they gave you is entirely inacurate.

A buddy of mine up here told me I had to use the Mepham (kent)branch as they were the only one who issued 52 wk green cards. i used them for 3 years until I urgently needed a renewal copy when on a trip to the UK & was nowhere near a fax, so they asked for my postcode to point me to a walk-in branch & when I told them, whilst visiting my now rented home in shiptson on stour, they told me there was an NFU branch 100m from me in the next street! I felt more than a bit stupid dealing with a Kent branch for so many years to find my house almost backed onto a local branch! Ignore what brokers tell you. NFU sell insurance, whether you have a farm, swine flu, a land rover, nfu mortgage etc.  Anyway, the mepham branch number (which is all I have) is 01474 813 141.

Naturally, you live in england & have regular trips to romania for many weeks at a time, but your base is in the uk

Hi wmp, I'm new to these forums and Romania and have read your post with interest. I have brought my car over from the UK and while I've SORNed it and insured it from the UK my MoT wil run out in October, short of driving back the UK is there another way to comlpy with the insurance requirements?

Thanks

I bought a car from Bulgaria to solve our imediate transport issues back in March, however considering how expensive it is to buy a second hand car here in Romania we are considering buying a UK car and bringing it over, (next year, no rush) there are alot of UK registered cars for sale in Ghencea, but i presume this is because there MOT's are infact running out or run out, we have not thought through it thoroughly yet, but my plan is to buy a car back in England and bring it over here on the UK plates, then when we have time we will register the car in Bulgaria on Bulgarian plates because its supposed to be a lot cheaper than Romanian plates, it all seems complicated i know, but the fact is its very expensive to buy a Romanian registered car, we run a Bulgarian ford escort estate, i paid 1300 euros for this car, i know for sure the same thing would have cost 2000 euros or so in Romania, and only 800 pounds (uk sterling) back in the UK.

A UK car needs to be insured for European use, and it needs an MOT? i pressume it can be 'sorned' off UK tax for European use, the V5 would also need to be sent to Swansea to tell them the car is being exported from the country too obviously. I am not fully clear on what i need to do yet, so if anyone has any info, that would be great.

Thanks.

A colleague of mine bought a car in Germany about 5 years ago. Paid the registration at the time of import, I think he paid about a grand. He's just been retrospectively taxed (i.e. stiffed) by the authorities for another 4 grand for tax on it. He doesn't even have the car anymore!

My solution; rent a car when I want to go away for the weekend, use the metro/RATB the rest of the time, take a cab if I have a lot of shopping to carry.

Agree with every single word! That's what I do, except for I rent cars only if I need to get out of town in all the rest cases I prefer cabs and subway.

mister bixby - there is an insurance company that dont require you to have an MOT for you to be covered abroad, and they have an indefinite green card... its called stuart Collins I think.

Hello, White Mountain!

I read your posts with interest. You seem quite knowledgeable!

I am planning to buy a RHD car from a Seller in Romania. The car currently has UK Plates.
You say RO registration is not necessary. However, I read on many forums that incase the car is to be used in RO for more than 6 months by a resident of RO (even if foreigner), then change of plates to RO is mandatory.
Can you please confirm this? With the necessary supporting rule/regulation Number/Section that I can quote to RAR?

Be much obliged!

Sincerely,
Bharat
