Nice / safe areas in southern Marseille

My family and I are moving to Marseilles for a year to work in a hospital in the 9th.

Does anyone have ideas about areas that are either not far (or well serviced for transport) that are nice/safe for my wife and kids to explore/get out and enjoy?

Willing to consider satellite towns/villages if they are particularly nice and relatively easy to get to and from
