Car Insurance - what do we need?

Robin & Sue

WE are leaving England and heading for Sibiu in November. Can we continue to drive on our current car insurance (since we are not coming back to England & won't have an address here), or do we need Romanian? If so, can we insure the car without registering it in Romania, or if we have to, how long would that take? So many things to think of !!

Hi Robin And Sue

If you are definitely not going back to the UK and are staying here permanently then you will have to register your car here. And then get Romanian insurance. I can help you with that.

For the meantime though, just make sure your current UK insurance is up to date and you have a green card. By the time the insurance will expire we should have registered your car here

I can help with other relocation questions, should you have any

Hi Dean/ Robin, there is another way. i have 4 uk cars up in brasov still registered & insured in the uk. If you use NFU insurance, they give you a years green card & since there is no way of knowing how long you are in or out of the uk, they don't ask. You cant really register your car in romania though due to cost. My old 1995 merc would cost me 7,000 or 8,000e to register, or 500e in Bulgaria, but since its only worth 1000gbp, I never bothered.

If you need any more info, just get in touch & I'll be happy to help.

I moved to Bucharest in February of this year (2011) i thought long and hard about bringing my car over from England too, in the end though i decided against it, in hindsight i am very pleased i did not bring my UK car here.

We bought a car, from Bulgaria, second hand prices there are similar to those in the UK, whereas here in Romania car prices are strangley very high, when i came over i thought i could get a big BMW 5 series for buttons, i was shocked at the price of none Dacia models here, we bought a 1999 Ford Escort estate for about a grand (£1000gbp) from Bulgaria, the same model in Romania is easily 3000 euro's which is ridiculous. Our car is Bulgarian registered, and Bulgarian insured, we have to go over the border once a year to sort the insurance and tax thing, which will cost us about 180 euro's,which is much better than the UK and Romania from what i have heard.

I am an ex pat living in Romania I need Classic Car Insurance for my 40 year old Triumph Spitfire Can you help!!!!

Dean_E

try www.stuartcollins.com

They insure vehicles overseas and may insure your classic car.

Nice car, by the way !

Cliff Jones

Thanks

There arn't many Triumph Spitfires in Romania i bet :D i would love to see one driving past me one day, if only to show my wife.

We recently bought an old Ford Sierra, i have some resto work to do on it then get it insured and MOT'd (Romanian version) it is a Romanian registered motor, unlike our other car, which has Bulgarian plates. I have never actually insured a Romanian car yet, anyone else know the ins and outs of this? Also the MOT thing?

Hi Daz

I have had the spit for over 20 years, completed about 80 percent of the work in the Uk, before moving to Satu Mare the rest over hear.

The car had to be 35 years old from the last spit to come off the Uk production line before I could register it.

I am now going to road test the care this weekend, then take it to RAR for its first inspection

The problem that I have is I can not get fully comp insurance, as the spit is an old time car, Just very basic insurance.

If you know of any insurance company that will insure my car please tell me

If you send me your e-mail address, I will send you some photos

Take care

Cliff

Hi Cliff, i am afraid i dont know of any insurance companys, but i will ask my wife, she has a cousin who is a Policeman, he might know more than i do.

IS your 'spit' registered in Romania? Romanian plates?

I will send you a message with my email :D i would love to see your car.

I might even pick your brains from time to time too if you dont mind, although my project is a wee baby compared to yours :)

Hi!,
i work part time in insurance bussines, most of them car insurances. Please send me more info about you/re car and some pictures as well and tell me what kind of insurance you need.I hope that you know that to register a car here meran to pay some taxes depending of the age of the car,the size of the engine, the age of the owner, etc. So after RAR they will tell you how much you have to pay to register your car with romanian plates. If you neeed more info please feel free to ask.Good luck!

Cliff Jones

Hi Onesti

I hope that you are well, thanks for the reply

Details of my car -
- Triumph Spitfire 1500
- 1975
- Owner C. I. Jones
- Value - about 10,000 - 12,000GBPS
- Imported from the Uk 2004 with import certificate
- Retromobil certificate  Seria A9 NR 1514/25.05/2013
- Atestat De Vehicul Istoric

I am making an appointment at RAR next week as I have test drove my car over the last 2 weeks on a Romanian basic insurance

When I have the car in the UK I had a fully comprehensive Classic Car Insurance by Footman James (Check the web site out - footmanjames.co.uk/?gclid=CNmJ0u3g07cCFU2N3god4hkAdg) at a cost of about 150 GBPs per year, I had to grantee the insurance company that I would be the only driver and that I would not complete more than 5,000 - 6,000 Kilometers per year

I would like a simmaler type of insurance in Romania

Thanks for your help

Take care and have a good weekend

if the car is registered with bulgarian plates you have to go to RAR and register wit romanian plates. But before that you have to check the value of the green tax that you have to pay according to romanian law OUG 9/2013.:http://static.anaf.ro/static/10/Anaf/AsitentaContribuabili_r/calculator_taxe/taxa_timbru_2013.html.
The green tax is calculated depending on the engine (cmc,KW),the age of the car and the polution norme(E1,E2,E3..etc)
Good luck,if you need more info please feel free to ask.

What advice do you need?  Considering the age of the car, you only need RCA insurance, You might be able to get CASCO on it this year, but after 10 years of age most if not all companies won't touch it.

jeff.conway

Thank you for responding. The car is still registered in the UK and I have been told it is very expensive to register it in Romania. Is it possible to get Insurance in Romania without registering the car here?
