Hello everyone!

I am new to the forum, planning on moving to Istanbul this autumn. I have thousands of questions regarding language teaching, here are some to start with:

1. I am from Sweden, in other words not a native speaker. But I speak and write English fluently... will this be a problem? Is it hard for non-native speakers to find teaching jobs?

2. I do have a bachelor degree in Dance pedagogy, and lots of experience when it comes to teaching. But I do not have an English teaching-certificate, would you recommend me to try to get a certificate? Or is it possible for non-native speakers to find jobs without it?

3. If you think I should get a certificate, what would be the best way to do it?

4. When is the best time to apply for the jobs? Is it possible to get a job in the middle of the semester, or do most of the schools look for teachers in the beginning of the term?

There's always a need for foreigner teachers in Istanbul. But summer season is coming up so its like low season. You can start googeling language schools and applying for some before coming here. Also try Kariyer.net (in Turkish but ggole Translate would be enough, its like monster.com). Some schools provide contracts, travel tickets etc. When you come here its also possible to find a job just by applying online or walking in to a language school. Also, if you have the correct certificates (CELTA or TEFL, which you can learn online or at as a course, get it if you plan on teaching English for a while) and enough experience, you might be able to make it in a university or high school. They usually request NATIVE SPEAKERS. Well, the definition of NATIVE SPEAKER here is that you are originally from a country that speaks English as a first language, you are a national of USA Canada Australia England etc.. If you have such a passport and qualifications such as CELTA TEFL etc then your chances are high. If not, well then it depends on the how desperate for teachers is the school you are applying for, but there are a lot of foreigners here so a lot of competition for teaching, but then again there are a lot of schools too..

Send me a message if you have more specific questions, I'm here to help however I can.

If you want to work in a sweatshop teaching groups of bad attitude kids and then not getting paid then come to Istanbul. I've taught in four other countries and here is the WORST place I ever taught at. AVOID,

Hello!

1. Schools usually prefer native speakers but ofcourse it does not mean you wont have chance to get a teaching job. Just try to look for schools who gives consideration to non native speakers.

2.  İ know some teachers who has other talents like dancing, painting, art, photography etc. has advantages coz u dont only teach the language but you can also have chance to teach your own specialization using the english language ofcourse! Based from my experienced, if you dont come from english language speaking country, you must need to take to take TEFL certificate or diploma. İ strongly suggest you to take a course to obtain the certificate. You may be able to find some schools or institutions, perhaps private courses that accepts non native speakers with good english communication and good teaching experiences even without the certificate but maybe ul get a lower salary than you expect. But good and well know schools really require that certificate because when they hire you, they need to apply for you a working visa and the ministry of education will definitely ask for the certificate. Please make sure that the school will process for you the visa. ( Very İmpt ! )

3.  You can get the certificate via online ! Normally you can finished the course maximun 6 months. (  İt took me 1 1/2 month :) ) depends how willing you are to do all the lessons and depends if your online teacher will pass u or not.

4.  Actually ur late :( schools usually starts hiring from March to June before the end of the school year ( as preparation to next school year)  But dont lose hope! There is a lot more oppurtunities here!

Goodluck!

Thank you Ganda for your post!

Do you have any recommendations for getting the certificate online? Which website did you use? How much money did it cost?
