simple question (I think): in a city where most of the population is under 30, smoking drugs are legal, and so on... how's the crime rate?

Keep away from allys or "gang" related areas.
Near the towns "red light district" is also a place to stay away from at night.
Mostly crime in the netherlands is pocket stealing, rape, vandelism and house breakins.

I see, but specifically, what areas / streets to avoid?

As cook, I'll get home late (2-3am most of the time), and really don't want to end up in a conflictive zone
