Moving to Cali

Post new topic

vicevix4

Hello and thank you for allowing me to post my question. I have a lovely family there and friend. He is my ex, but our friendship has flourished. I adore him as a brother. He lives in Cali, I’ve been there 3 times, and love it. I hope to move there soon.

im a nurse and want to teach English parttime if I can. My ss income is not that much, I am thankful I’m still working, and will apply for SsI when I can. I may be getting around $1400 to &1800 a month and want to live simply , don’t expect a maid or cook. Do you think it is possible for me to find a decent 1 bedroom around $400?

thank you

@vicevix4- Well decent to you and decent to me may be entirely different things. One flag to me is that you mention ssi, I assume you are talking about SSDI or Social Security Disability Income as well as assume that you are hoping to make this a long term move (more than six months). I don't know if you have investigated the current visa circumstances in Colombia or not; but, disabilities may make it more difficult to get a visa.

The larger question unasked would seem to be can you make it on the income you suggest. My niece is a Registered Nurse in Colombia with about ten years experience and is surviving on about $500 per month and is purchasing her own apartment without a spouse. How limited is your mobility?

Best of luck

@Lpdiver thank you. No I’m not disabled, it will be social security benefits. A terrible MVA in the past, and thankfully I healed completely. All of my family members died during pandemic, mother, covid stroke, sister cancer, stepfather house fire, and another sister that was hit my a car, all during the pandemic. So I’m thankful to be alive and so thankful for my supportive friends in Colombia. I am still working but may stop in July. Thankfully there are no limitations, I’m very physically active. God be with you, take care.

Santiago de Cali is the most affordable of the big cities in Colombia.  For $400 USD, about 1.6 million COP at today's exchange rate, you can find a nice apartment.  You should be able to find a decent 1-bedroom apartment for considerably less.

Look at this site to see owner-posted ads as well as agencies, for houses, apartments and rooms for rent:
