Giving birth in Bogota

Why not buy a travel insurance policy for that timeframe? That is what I do when I travel to Colombia, if I have an issue they bond wherever I decide to go. Might want to make sure they will do that with a pre existing condition, one thing I do know is most folks there want paid for services rendered, I suspect the quality of care you get will directly depend on your ability to pay. Also my wife is a nurse from Bogota and there are some areas that she refuses to go there do to safety concerns. From what I have seen with the public health care system the wait and service is substandard, cash money gets you a much better doctor. My opinion only is that you won't get any service unless you can pay cash money for that service. I have watched several of my relatives use the public health care system for the following issues, prostate cancer, brain bleeding, colon issues, Ig issues and the results and service have been dismal to say the least.

Thanks fir responding. Unfortunately, as you mentioned, my pregnancy is considered a pre-existing condition and cant be covered. Regardless, most travel insurance cease to cover pregnancy beyond 24 weeks.

Does your wife have any hospitals or specialist she WOULD go to? The cost will be what it will be, I'd rather we all make it through alive.

@Katie88johns I'm sure the standard of care at a hospital like Santa Fe is as good as anything you would get in the US. In general, healthcare in Colombia is very inexpensive... Santa Fe much less so, or the Clinica del Country, for example, but still much less than in the US (tho I know that's not saying much).

...reveals the cost of giving birth in Bogotá is around 4-6 million COP on average, for a natural vaginal birth. It's probably around the same or even lower in smaller cities. At today's exchange rate that's around $900 - $1300 USD.

If the birth involves a C-section (a Caesarean section) the costs will be higher (usually a stay of at least two days is involved) but still it can be cheaper in smaller cities. Do a search for
