Moving from Austria to the USA with family-but where??

Hi everyone!

Lately my husband and I were talking how it would be to move to the USA. We have a 16 year old daughter who has 2 years left of school. My husband and I are very flexible with work.

Maybe someone could tell me where there are good places to move to. It should rather be a big city but still have a nice environment. We are financially well off so costs of living wouldn´t be a problem. We love outdoor activities and also have a dog.

And what about the schooling system in America? Is it very different to Austrias?
We already thought about Seattle, but we would like to get some more information.

Maybe there is someone who moved from Europe to America and could explain the procedure.

Seattle is notorious for rain and cloudy weather. It gets about 150 days of rain and 225 days of cloudy weather a year. It wouldn't be my first choice as an outdoor lover. There's lots of places that could be suggested, but maybe there's a reason in particular you're drawn to Seattle?

Yes of course there are differences in the school systems, though with only 2 years left...your daughter should be able to acclimate and get through it without problem, if she's doing well enough in Austria.

Also, what is your visa/citizenship status?

Which places would you suggest? Seattle is not our final choice. It seemed nice as it's not a small town but still has a 'neighbourhoody' feeling. We also had a look at Vancouver but apparently it's even rainier there.

My daughter is doing really well. We read about the IB-Diploma but we're not sure if it´s the right thing to do. Maybe an international school?

At the moment we have the ESTA and then later an L-Visa

Take a road trip to find your place. Yes, Seattle can be depressing. Natives do grow moss between their toes. Remember - ESTA/VWP does not allow work. L1 employer can sponsor Green Card. Otherwise your daughter will be on her own once she reaches 21. We had very good experiences with Lawrenceville, NJ prep.
