Moving to the USA with a disability

Immigrants are not eligible for social security benefits until they fulfill the requirements.

Having a disability should not be a barrier to living abroad. While the intricacies of one’s move to the USA may be specific to the individual, certain steps can be undertaken to make the process smoother.

What are the important aspects you would personally keep in mind during the planning phase (social security benefits, ongoing medical treatment, etc.)?

If you are married to an American who is eligible to receive Social Security and Medicare you also qualify if you have reached the qualifying age. If not you can purchase Medicare.

Are you required to go through a medical check-up before your move?

In order to get a green card, you have to pass a physical.

Are there any organizations or groups who lend support to expatriates who have a disability?

I don't know.



What are your thoughts on the infrastructure in the USA (public spaces, transportation and buildings)?


Usually adequate in big cities. Some limitations in smaller places.

Are there enough opportunities to make the most of your social life in the USA? Are leisure activities made accessible to people with disabilities?
