Quality of customer service in the USA

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Customer service can say a lot about everyday life in the USA, and for many expats, it’s something that could take time to get used to. In order to help expats and soon-to-be expats to adjust to local expectations, we invite you to share your insights.

How would you describe customer service in the USA?

Are staff generally friendly and helpful, or more formal and direct?

How do businesses handle complaints or requests for refunds?

Do expats get treated differently than locals?

Any tips on how to get the best service in the USA?

Share your experiences and stories, whether positive, challenging or funny!

Thank you for your contribution.

From my experience, customer service in the USA is generally quite friendly and approachable, but it can also feel a bit “scripted” at times. Staff are usually polite and helpful, especially in retail and restaurants, though the level of service can vary depending on the place.

One thing that stands out is how seriously businesses often take complaints and refunds — many stores have fairly flexible return policies compared to other countries, which is helpful.

I don’t think expats are treated very differently overall, but understanding small cultural things (like tipping in restaurants or being direct when asking for help) definitely makes interactions smoother.

A simple tip would be to be polite but clear about what you need — people are usually willing to help if you communicate directly.
