I have been living in Mexico for 15 years now. What I have learned is that Health insurance in Mexico works very differently.

Hi "Stepho555", first the long-term (10 years) visa will not allow you to get either the IMSS or Seguro popular affiliation.

Only the temporary or permanent residency status will allow you to apply with your CURP.

Personally, my wife and I became permanent residents in August 2017 abd opted for IMSS which gives us great services (all meds are covered, transport paid if need to an hospital since it's a family unit service with emergency in our area), appointments taken via internet, need to see your physician once a month to get your meds, blood tests every 6 months, in my case annual injection for osteoporosis. BUT, you must be able to speak spanish to interact with the doctors, nurses, technicians

The premium are based on age for 50-59 it's 6000$ pesos/year

Finally, if your intention is not to live fulltime in Mexico and kept links with the USA as a resident then you have travel insurance in case of emergency.

Based on what I’ve heard, I’m not expecting that obtaining a temporary residency visa will not be challenging. Do you agree? I understand I need to begin the process in the U.S.

Hi, yes the process stars in the U.S., proof of revenues and/or investments is required not sure of the amounts since it varies with the exchange rate in Montreal consulate the revenues for temporary residency are 1705$cnd for the last 6 months and 28408$cnd investments for the last 12 months.
