Information on Merida ? US couple considering move.

Hi Robin! I  can't speak to Merida specifically, but I have spent time in Valladolid, which is about two hours from there. I'm actually looking at relocating myself (later this year?!?) and will end up in Valladolid. I will also be listing a couple of apartments and houses for rent in that area in the very near future (starting at about $250/mo for a 1 BR unit). I do property management/vacation rentals here in the US and will be doing the same in Valladolid, helping a friend with his properties. I'm happy to discuss further, if it may be of interest. One of the benefits of Valladolid is that it is so central to many attractions on the Yucatan Peninsula: Tulum, Chichen Itza, Cancun, Playa del Carmen.

My name is Lisa. I currently live in Merida and have for the last three years. We love it here. It is safe, affordable and welcoming. The heat can be a bit much from April thru July. We have learned to adjust. We live in the san Sebastian barrio. There is a large expat community in Merida. It is a mix of Americans, Canadians, French and a little of everywhere else. This community is diverse and open. I think you would enjoy it. Merida is only 45 minutes to the beach. We usually go at least once a month to fish or swim. Enjoy your time here.

Thank you for the information!  We are not sure yet when we plan on moving -- one of us will move there first -- but I'll certainly be in touch with you when the time comes up.

Plus, I'm thinking about visiting this summer to take a look around.  It' all pretty overwhelming and new so any help we can get is much appreciated.

Hello. I have lived in Mexico full time for 8 years -( in San Miguel de Allende - a place you might want to check out). I have visited Merida many times and it is a wonderful city. Many expats enjoy living there. However, the climate is very hot year round (especially in August) so that's something to be aware of. I do know a great person that helps people relocate there. Hi Robin,

My husband and I have been living in Merida for the past four years and really enjoy it. Yes, it is hot, but there is AC everywhere as a result. You won't find that in other cities. We lived in Querétaro for 3 years with no heat or AC in our house. We had to buy small heaters and room coolers to survive there. No big deal really.

Here you don't need heat, but AC is a requirement.

The food here is amazing. The people are delightful. The culture is fantastic. And the health care system is excellent. We have put it to the test recently and I assure you it is as good as the US with much better prices!!!

I loved Querétaro, too, but Merida has easy and quick access to many beaches and a lot more historic, archeological and cultural activities. And, you can buy a house for much less than in other cities.

Merida is growing, so, if you are planning to relocate here, there are plenty of housing options.
