Hospitals in Ras Al Khaimah

HOSPITALS

There are not many government hospitals in Ras al Khaimah, and they are mostly open to health cards holders and for emergency cases only. Opened in 2007, RAK Hospital is the only private hospital in the Emirate. Many private clinics with various specializations are also available. In addition, hospitals in Sharjah and Dubai are reachable within one and a half hours by car.

By the year 2010 the Ras Al Khaimah Ministry of Health plans to open an additional three new hospitals – Sheikh Khalifa Hospital, Al Nakheel Hospital and Abdullah Rashid Omran Hospital in the district of Humraniya. The ministry is also planning to set up a number of small medical mobile units to service patients in remote areas. Additionally, some privately run hospitals will offer specialized medical services in the near future.

GOVERNMENTAL HOSPITALS

SAQR HOSPITAL

It is the main governmental hospital in the Emirate, and it is a surgical hospital for Ras Al Khaimah. It is open 24 hours for health cardholders and emergencies.

SAIF BIN GHOBASH HOSPITAL

This hospital specializes in treatment of medical conditions that require non-surgical procedures.

SHA’AM HOSPITAL

It is primarily focused on treating geriatric and long-term care patients.

This hospital was opened in 2009 and is aimed for geriatric patients.

Opened in 2007, it is the first fully operating private hospital that offers a wide range of medical services and specialities. It has state of the art medical equipment and a highly professional staff. It is open 24 hours a day and also has an emergency unit.

This hospital will have highly specialized programs for oncology and cardiology. It will also have a trauma centre and an emergency department.

MATERNITY

Maternity care and baby delivery is offered in Saqr Hospital and RAK Hospital. Services in the governmental hospitals are provided free of charge (except for the room fees) to the holders of a health card. However, government hospitals might not be up to some people standards and it is likely you will not receive the attention you might be looking for. You might also come across some communication problems, as often Arabic is often the first and only language of the staff.

If you have a private medical insurance that covers maternity, or you are prepared to pay yourself, consider RAK Hospital, or hospitals in Dubai like the American Hospital or the Welcare Hospital. RAK Hospital has a well-equipped maternity unit and hires highly trained staff who can speak fluent English. In RAK Hospital, the delivery package starts at 5,000dhs for a standard room, up to 8,000dhs for VIP suite. To have a caesarean section performed you have to expect to pay around 12,000dhs. Another advantage offered by RAK Hospital is the possibility for fathers to participate during the delivery of their babies.

PAPER WORK BEFORE AND AFTER GIVING BIRTH

Required documents at the governmental hospitals before the delivery include: health card, marriage certificate, passport copies of mother and father, and proof of Ras Al Khaimah residency (rent contract, phone bill, etc). After the delivery you will receive a Notification of Birth in Arabic, which will be necessary to get a birth certificate. You will be further instructed to go to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Foreign Affairs to get the birth certificate of your baby and its translation attested. The hospital, in which your baby is delivered, should inform you about the procedure of registering your child.

UNMARRIED AND PREGNANT
Unlike many other countries, in the UAE, it is against the law to be unmarried and pregnant. Punishment can be very harsh and usually involves a jail term followed by deportation.

Governmental hospitals will give you a hard time if you cannot present a marriage certificate when requesting maternity care, and they will most likely notify the police

Good dentists are readily available in Ras Al Khaimah. Ask around for recommendations, check with your insurance company, or call one of the bellow mentioned clinics (these are given merely as a reference).

Optical services and frames are relatively cheap compared to Europe or the USA. If you do not have your eyeglass prescription with you, your eyes can be checked at the opticians.

It is very easy to find a pharmacy in Ras Al Khaimah. They are often situated near medical centres and are well distributed all over the city.

Most of the pharmacies are open from 9am to 1.30pm, 4.30pm to 10pm. Pharmacies mentioned here are well stocked, and their pharmacist can help you to select your medication.

I just have a quick question, the re don't seem to be GP practices like in the UK so where would I go just for repeat prescription medication? Somebody told me I can buy them directly from the pharmacy, is this true?

All depends of which medicin you need.  Not all of them are available in UAE.

Do you know how much cost 30min  physiotherapie ? If I go there with a prescription for physiotherapie from a swiss doctor is it ok?

Hello Anne-Sylvie,

I'd suggest you to contact RAK Hospital which is a Swiss run private hospital in RAK I'm actually trying to reach one of the ladies there to see if I can have her email address to give to you.

Regarding the medicine, all depends of which medicine you need because all of them are not allowed in UAE. You can ask your swiss doctor for the prescription and then see a local doctor to get a UAE prescription. Although you can buy most medicine without prescription in UAE.

Hı thank you for such a great post which is very informative I have a very important question me and my wife are young newly wedded couples we are expecting a angel in our new life in 6 months time we live is RAK and our new health insurance will not cover our maternity this time so I have to safe and spend from our pockets. So the question is where should we consider to give birth in uae who are less money making and more care giving hospital and can we have water birth in uae. Thanks

In the last 2 weeks I have accommpanied friends to the following clinics/hospitals which are available to both residents and non residents. If you have a health card (it is law that companies provide a health card to their employees) you may be charged a registration fee, all non residents will be charged registration:
AL JAZEERA CLINIC: 75Dhs non resident/20Dhs with health card
no charge for treatments
SAQR HOSPITAL (next door to RAK Hospital) No registration charge applicable and no charge for emergency treatments or XRays
SAIF HOSPITAL: Charges as per JAZEERA CLINIC and no charge for treatments
RAK HOSPITAL: If you do not have private medical insurance with your employer the registration charge is 100Dhs and 80Dhs for a consultation. XRays cost from 1000Dhs.
The Government run hospitals are well staffed and professional. RAK Hospital is a 5star private establishment.
I hope this helps with any queries, RAK is well covered with their many hospitals and clinics available to everyone with or without a health card.

I went this week end to the RAK hospital 2 times.
I don^t have a visa yet. I paid 150DHS for a dentist control + 50DHS for registration.

On Sunday I had an appointement with a doctor because my legs become very big. I was very surprise because it was very quick. In 40min I saw the doctor and I had blood and urine test. I had to pay 1000DHS for a complete test and 350DHS for the consultation.

It's very well organised theysend you a sms with your appointement and inform you when your test is ready.

I come from Switzerland and for me it's cheap......
