If you don’t already have one, you must get a TIE identification card asap ahead of April next year, when all of the EU Schengen region will have the new biometric EES entry and exit scheme in operation.

"Must" is maybe a bit strong. But, yes, it's probably sensible for Brits to get their TIEs sorted before EES.

To be clear, such TIE-less Brits are those who, like me, are beneficiaries of the Brexit/Withdrawal Agreement and are still hanging on to their little paper certificate (the "Green NIE"). As it's nearly 5 years since the Brexit drama, I thought I was one of the few lazy ones... but, apparently, there are still 50,000 of us.

The Green NIE is still valid (indefinitely, I believe), so we're not being compelled to switch over. We can still travel to/from Spain, but we won't enjoy unlimited stays (just the standard 90 days, visa-free). For those of us who live elsewhere, but have a holiday home in Spain, this is probably fine. But if you live entirely/mostly in Spain, then not having your TIE could get rather inconvenient. For info, check the usual Cita Previa system.
