A health plan (such as Medicare, EDP or CTT health plans) is not health insurance. What is required on visas is to have a health insurance with certain insurance coverages.

Thanks again to JohnnyPT for clarifying this. I would be interested to know whether a full international health insurance like BUPA would be sufficient for a D7 application. Or does it really have to be a Portuguese Medical Insurance? Thanks in advance for the help.

For visa application, the applicant must subscribe a private health insurance to cover his/her stay in Portugal. It can be a portuguese insurance or not, such as Bupa Global, that includes these insurance covers:

- Major illnesses and conditions as well as emergency care

- Medical evacuation covered

- ...

Health plans are discount and loyalty cards for medical clinics. They have nothing to do with health insurance with these covers included.

Hello again everybody,

I see many posts where people are registering with SNS after they receive their 2 year residence card. Can I cancel my private health insurance after I get my residence card to save money?

If one presents an SNS  card, are all visits to the emergency department free regardless of treatment or even that has limitations? Just curious.
