Medical insurance

kfdowns

My wife and I are planning an extended trip to Portugal. We have a Medicare Advantage plan that says it will reimburse for emergency medical expenses with the same co-pays and deductibles as if we were out of network in the States. Is that sufficient for a vacation trip of 10 weeks, or should we get private travel medical insurance as well?

Hi and Welcome,

Unfortunately no one except yourself can supply that answer as it will depend on many personal things (such as your attitude to risk) and predicting the future ( are you going to require medical treatment whilst here?). I have never taken out medical insurance cover here and, in over 15 years, have paid for treatment myself BUT that is our choice.

I would take out a (normally inexpensive)  travel insurance that covers emergency medical expenses and transfer back home as soon as can be done from a medical point of view.
