What are the challenges faced by Britons returning to the UK?

The Financial Times (FT) recently published a list of issues British expats have to consider before moving back to the UK. If expats are uninformed and unprepared, they risk facing “astronomical” visas, shipping, tax and housing costs in the process of returning home. By choosing the right time to move back, becoming tax-compliant and dealing with their overseas assets and benefits in an informed way, they can make their transition back home smoother and more affordable.

It's always been the case that one has to plan properly to leave a country and take care over tax planning. It's nothing new.

For those here, the government is likely to drive Western oriented liberal people out.

I just read Hungary is even more in bed with Russia over the Paks nuclear power station - they've started building work on the expansion.  While nuclear sector is not under sanction, it's looking weird to be even more in bed with everyone else's enemy.  Arguably it's to say they were doing something about the fuel crisis when elections come around in 2026 but it won't be online for some years.

This nuclear power station was agreed on in 2014, well 2 new reactors. It was just signed off, on Thursday.

Yes, that's right.  But it seems Hungary hasn't learnt a thing (again).  It's like their nuclear plans are tracking Russian aggression in Ukraine - Crimea, Donbass and who knows.  The Russians effectively run the nuclear plant here in Hungary so essentially their people control 40% of the power supply.

Seems rather obvious NOT to get into bed with the Russians about anything, let alone deepen the relationship while there's a war going on next door.

They could have gone with other technology - French, British, US, Japanese or Korean etc.

OV is partying in Croatia at the moment.

Russians are financing the nuclear expansion project.   It's a secret deal.  No-one knows the details.  Of course, it increases the indebtedness of the country to an clearly untrustworthy party.   They argued it was a strategic initiative and not subject to EU rules for competitive bidding.   The EU did investigate but did not do anything.  The situation is quite bizarre.  I don't know what it is about Hungary but they always bet on the wrong horse.  Been like that throughout history.  Poor strategic choices and absurd nationalism. Very odd.

While there's effectively stalemate in Ukraine, it's kind of a new status quo, I cannot see anyone being allowed to do significant business with Russia which is now a pariah state.  I heard a defence correspondent on the radio saying Russia is going to run out of ammunition, weapons and people to fight.  They don't have the capability to refurbish their artillery at the speed they need to keep up their attacks.    Situation in Ukraine is proportionally better as they have Western supply of better gear and determination to fight.   It'll be several generations before Russia comes back into the international fold.  Failure at the centre there might lead to a break up of the country.  One could hope for that.  The Eastern part is likely to be more volatile and an internal headache for Putin.

If Russia goes away or breaks down in internal strife,  OV could be left with a lemon - half built reactors and no-one to complain to.   Unlikely that would have been a problem with reliable international partners.  And who knows what will happen when OV is out.

Be careful what you wish for...
I looked online at my sisters name, she is listed as a actress/ model??
I know she was in a movie, not going to ever in my life tell the title of it!
X rated!!!
She did model for a short spell, until her husband had enough of her agent bugging her to go to dinner with,"clients".
The entire industry of "art" leaves me cold inside.
I mentioned in the past how my cousin was a child actor and was dumped when he turned into a pre-teen and had a head injury.
He did himself in.
Not worth the pressure.
I had my friend,Peggy who was a high end runway model in Milan try to off herself many times. She was always being used by wealthy men just so they could be seen in public with her because of her looks. Everything about her was just about perfect except for the scares on her wrists. For so many of us it is hard to relate about being too beautiful for our own good.
The entire entertainment industry is bad news in my book.
A simple life with being allowed to live under the radar is the best overall.
- @Marilyn Tassy
I can imagine the pressure being overwhelming.  A wrong word, an indiscretion, wrong company, wrong age, too fat, too thin and the career is going to be over in a flash.   Maybe it's just a teenage fantasy and it'll fizzle out.  Whatever she does, I am sure she'll eventually be OK.  She's a smart cookie and not one to worry about too much.

I always had  a fantasy I was going to be a rock guitarist or drummer but lack of talent soon nobbled that idea.   I was simply not good enough and I should get a real job.   Even now, 30+ years later from starting this particular career,  I am still thinking I should get a real job.  Or if my numbers come up, retire!

I was watching YouTube yesterday.  It was where The Beatles in the 60s were playing on the roof of a building.    You can see they had talent by the bucket load. Just oodles of it.
- @fluffy2560

Yes, so much pressure to be in the entertainment industry.
My sister was a natural, a big ,"Ham" so to speak. Funny, msart and never took herslef to seriously or anyne else for that matter.
A real social butterfly.
I wonder if  I coould of done better with an older sister or not. She could be too much at times but then again, she got everyone around her in a good mood and brought out their best, most times.
Her daughter and grand daughter are the same way, extremely outgoing and loud.
The only people I've been around who can shut me up, I'm too busy laughing or just listening.
My sister was naturally very tiny, built like a young Twiggy and about her size in the 60's.
I am a but more althetic or was. Slim but not a string bean.
My sister and her husband were the epitme of cool and being younger I hung onto their every word.
Well, that didn't always work out in the end.
I am tall but as a 14 year old would grow then fill out then grow tall again. Once during one of my filling out periods my sister and her husband tld me that they had been discussing me.
I might be a ,"beauty" if I didnt allow myself to get to heavy.
Well I felt like a hipp after that and developed an eating dsorder.
No way could I ever be 108lbs but I tried.
Have to be very careful with teenagers, they take everything to heart and it can be dangerous.

We now learn the reason for the disparity in the victim count; 4 were an entire family and no next of kin could be found to confirm identities; one of the four was 8 months pregnant.  May all the victims RIP.

Just came back from shopping, stopped by the OMV to get gasoline.
NINCS BENZIN written on the piece of paper. No E10 again, at least in 14th District, we didn't "investigate" further.  I guess licking Putler's a** doesn't help much, excuse my French

Said on Euronews the driver of the truck was a 48-year old Spanish man.

Idle speculation but it doesn't sound like it was a malicious or terrorist attack but bad or inattentive driving.

Have to wait and see what the police say.

Awful situation.

Happened to Mrs F a week ago.  On the way back from Balaton, no fuel (E10/95) to be found.  She did find some at Auchan but only at the higher price as unattended station.  So 10 litres was enough to get home and then next day, fill up with the subsidised fuel.  There were reports a while back Putler is not pumping oil to Hungary.  All that Putin rear end/backside smooching and slobbering has got OV nowhere.

I was musing to myself as I walked the dog in the forest, if OV's push on the nuclear power station at Paks and getting in deeper with Putler is related to the withholding of the EU funds?   An attempt to throw the spanner in the works - again.

Nuclear work with the Russians couldn't be more ill-timed. Possibly it's some silly plan by Putin being carried out by one of his pet poodles - OV.  Some UK politicians are saying a leak at Zaporizhzhia caused by Russian shelling is an Article 5 attack on NATO member states.  Then we're really in a global war and where will OV's distraction plan be then?

Blame the EU and head for the HUexit.

I wonder whether many people in Eastern Europe got lobotomized to still support that botox red tumor... I've noticed slight shifting from support in SK, but the amount of people trying to convince me of the EU/NATO/US/meteorologists (obviously!) wrongdoings is still uncomfortably high

That's a good way to put it.   People have left their marbles at home.  Or the lights on but no-one's at home.

Mrs Fluffy has a relative who is absolutely convinced that Putin is correct.  I am just stunned by that person. So educated yet so easily led.  Unbelievable.

Even someone very close to Mrs Fluffy has started spouting doubt.   When we were told Putin might be right by this person, we both burst out laughing. The person seemed surprised we didn't believe state media.

Moreover, Mrs Fluffy's employer asked about MY views and was surprised to hear I thought of OV negatively.  D'uh!

I asked one of my friends about pro-Putler lobby here and he said probably on the day they saw some corrupting news report, they weren't in possession of the single brain cell they all share so couldn't process lies from truth!

Educated people supporting this violence frustrate me the most. I could make my peace with simple folks or at least try to understand. But for people whom I once considered intelligent... I've no words or explanations... possibly a sociologist, psychologist or some other -ist would be able to provide an explanation. I believe there'll be some sort of "societal" or "political" depression in the future. I'll be first in line at the shrink's office cause the helplessness I've been feeling recently starts to wear me down

That's sad. Especially coming from close family. My friend's 14 yo daughter is on meds for some thyroid issue, gaining weight is listed as one of many many maaaany side effects. To her father it seemed to be the best idea to express his dissatisfaction with this particular side effect saying it'd be better not to take the pills. Out loud. In front of everyone. Cause... why not.. Very supportive and flattering for a youngster to hear this from own father.  Let alone someone with jelly belly....

Yes, it's hard to understand.    There must be something in the water.

As I have said before, Mrs F is also fed up and is talking of leaving the country.

Our kids are also saying similar things - it's quite bad when kids say they feel oppressed.

But where to go?  And OV won't be there forever.

I hope your friends daughter can heal from her thyroid issues. Way too young for such a serious illness.
I persanolly believe most of our illnesses are caused by un natural  things around us.
Bad water, too many chemicals in the food, overproccessed foods, bad air and not enough exercise.
To me this topic hits home more then gas prices or politics does.
My brother has stage 4 cancer ATM and I know for years he wasn't taking care of what he ate.
Once you're in the hand of doctors you might as well kiss yourself good-bye.
One cure leads to another problem. Pills and drugs do more damage then trying to find the root cause and making lifestle changes.
Stage 4 is  bit beyond  just getting more exercise though.

I totally agree, everything is very sensitive.

We've got a teenager here and another one shortly to be teenager.  It's tough gig being a teenager.  There's that waxing and waning flux between childhood and adulthood, hormones raging and realisation that one has to find one's place in the world. It's all quite a shock to the cosy life of being young, insulated from life by your parents - assuming they are doing or trying to do the right thing.  But it does get better as they get older.  We were all teenagers once.  Somehow we all get through it. Amazing really we survived.

I've often been investigated for thyroid problems.  It's a small gland but vitally important.  My thyroid levels are always on the edge.   Lifestyle changes can only go so far to fix fundamental faults.  One has to try to adapt.   I have type 2 diabetes. I've had to change the way I live - don't drink, don't smoke, limit carbs, lay off sugar, eat less and try to do more exercise.  It's a slow burner but the damage mounts up.

I remember hearing about Steve  Jobs - the Apple guy. He had cancer of some type and tried to cure himself by eating tomatoes.  A quack cure.  When that didn't work, he sought medical assistance.  Too late.  Might have bought a few more years with earlier intervention.

I think teenagers grew up faster in earlier generations.
I know my Hungarian aunt was only 15 when she married my uncle.
She was a newbie in the US with her parents.
My grandfather ran away from home at 14 and joined the US Army as a horse and water boy.
My mother had to quit school at 14 and get a full time job since her mother had died and her father was sort of out of it by then and living in the VA home with free rent for himself during the depression. ( He was in his mid 60's by then, mom arrived late in his life)
I can't even imagine doing what they did at 14-15 years old.
Man, never even talked to boys at 15 let alone get married to one!
Mom was very over protective, we couldn't date until we were at least 16 and had decent school grades.
Beleive me, there was no line waiting in the wings when  I was 16! All the teens I knew were too akward to even talk to.
I did have a date at age 17. Worst date in history too!
Some Boy Scout, I am serious, he was an Eagle Scout asked me out to the movies.
Mom made him come in and she grilled him for over 10 mins before we could go out.
Where he lived, what his hobbies were  was he a good river, all sorts of embarrassing questions.
I figured he must of like me to go through that grilling.
Well, Eagle Scount my bottom!!
First thing he did was lie to my mother and I.
I was not allowed to a drive in movie, only inside a theather with others.
He drove off to th dirve-in. I told him my mother would be pissed if she found out, he blew it off.
Ok so 5 mins into watching the movie he took my hand and put it down his tousers!!
I whipped my hand out and told him to take me home. I don't think he even bought pop corn!
I'm lucky he didn't get even more aggressive and did drive me home.
The look on my face must of said it all, my mom sort of smiled and said oh, you're home early.
That was the last date I ever excepted by anyone in my hometown, just full of freaks.

So sorry about your brother. We got cancer running in family from
mom's side, especially the kidney cancer, I even got genetically tested, I carry the wrong gene so i need to get checkups every 3-6 months. It's not funny but I wanna know my enemy.  My best friend died from ALS too young and I intend to live as long as possible cause he hadn't had the chance to.

I'm so happy not to be a teen nowadays. My niece is 17yo, and she is always in rush - to school, from school, home study, additional tutoring... I wonder when the times have flown and what she's gonna remember from these days other than school and pressure.

Glad she is on the road to recovery, wish her all the best for a long healthy life.

My brothers cancer runs in our family too.

Colon cancer.

He had some very expensive radiaiton treatments. Two times at the cost of $100,000 US each!!!

I doubt in Hungary they would offer such treatments at those prices.

It's rather new therapy, Y-90.

So far the tumors in his liver are gone from the treatments!

Now just have to work on the main issues.

He is lucky he has fantastic health insurance from his job.

He is still working which I can't even believe considering how ill he is.

He is still working which I can't even believe considering how ill he is.

It's good to hear that the treatment is successful. But the price is mindblowing.

One a lighter topic...

My youngest bro and his wife went to a hard rock concert in Ca. the other evening.

Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Poison and Joan Jett.

From their photos it looked like they were very close up to the stage.

My SIL told me the concert lasted 7 HOURS!!!!

Doubt I could sit in my seat that long even if the Stones were playing their greatest hits.

Wow. 7 hours, these old rockers are really needing that last paycheck.

My sister's friend lived in the same apt. building in Hollywod that Joan Jett did before she hit the big time.

Story is that she was rather rowdy and the ladies had to stay a distance from her...She likes the ladies so rumor says.

I'd gladly stay up to 7 hours for any of those or others from The 80's era . That's my kind of music

Interesting line up. 7 hours is far too long. Just play the hits, compress it all down and get out of there!

I remember the drummer in Def Leppard lost an arm in a car accident. I thought he was finished but I saw him in a video, drumming with one arm.  One of the odd things about Def Leppard, despite being a British band, is they weren't popular in the UK at all when I was into heavy metal. They were virtually unknown there for a long time despite being massive in the USA. Strange.

I never knew Joan Jett was batting for the other team. I don't think she's "out" as such. But if she is, meh, who cares except for the "Serbians".

I got respect for the band after i learned they basically interrupted their "career" waiting for their drummer to learn to play with one arm.

Have you noticed the new changes?

That's really good. I didn't know they did that. I did look the guy up and he has a specially customised electronic drum set. Pretty good stuff. Quite a lot of supergroups have two drummers so perhaps they do that too. Haven't listened to them for years.

No, didn't notice until you pointed it out!

I'd quite like to see like a HTML view button.

Emojis are pushed off the bottom of the page so not visible in the way one would like.

I like Def Leppard, saw them in New Mexico in the mid 90's.

A fun show we will never forget.

A large native American man was sitting behind us.

His tiny lady was getting rowdy.

All of a sudden he lands on my husband lap!!

My husband was afraid to get mixed up in whatever was going on so just stood up with his hands in the air!

We moved seats!

My youngest bro is still into heavy metal.

He used to be a roady when in his early 20's. Went on tour with bands like Iron Maiden. Even did a gig for Stevie Nicks once, Said she was really nice.

Yes, one has to give Def Leppard some credit, really have to ,"hand it to them"!

Sorry for the pun, my grandmother lost her arm at age 12. People can adjust

Not sure which limb I'd lose if there was a choice.  For drummer, it seems all are needed.

I still like heavy metal but more into the classics of it.  Stevie Nicks I thought was a drug addled depressive.  Maybe she got rehab and therapy.   I am not sure what's up with Fleetwood Mac.  They fired Lindsay Buckingham.  He was good. Weird.

Drummer needs also legs1f60f.svg

I'd hate to lose any limb.

I've used crutches many times and not being able to put weight on your leg is rather scary enough.

I once was using crutches when my son was 1 year old. On his first BD I dislocated my knee .

I was alone a few times with him and couldn't pick him up and walk.

I had to sit on the floor and put him on my lap while I slid around the floor.

Had to adjust, not sure what I would of done if we had to leave the apt. fast.

My grandmother lost her arm in Poland when she was 12.

She went on to have 8 children.

No help with them either.

She traveled alone with 2 small children, my father and my aunt for over 2 weeks on a ship from Europe to NY.

She was a strong person I'd say.

Your grandma must have been determined to do all that.

I guess her arm loss meant she had to adapt and develop techniques to overcome the lost of a limb.  And with 8 kids not helping, ay caramba.

Perhaps a generation used to more "making do".

As the saying goes - you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only option left.

I'd rather not to think about losing even tooth

Teeth are not so bad. They are replaceable with implants. In day to day life, it's still possible to eat as normal.

Limbs are another thing. Eventually we'll be like lizard people and our limbs will grow back using genetic engineering and lizard DNA.

Lizard people live amongst us.
