School for child

Mahmud2020

Hi, we have a child aged 10 and a half. We will be moving to  Greifswald in January 2020. In July our child will be 11. We think he will have to to get admission  in class VI in July ((and now he will have to to get admission in class five). Could anybody guide us through the proceedure of getting admission in a gymnasium type school? Although our son speaks good English,  he has only  very basic German language skill.  Any help will be appreciated.

If his German abilities are not sufficient to follow classes, you better put him, at first,  into a special preparatory class for foreign kids. Many public schools offer these and your son will be able to change to the normal stream after 6 - 12 months.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your reply.

We also do not think that our son will not be able to catch up with a regular class with his present German language skills. Good to know that most schools offer special language programmes for foreign kids.
Could you /anyone possible shed some light into the admission procedure to gymnasium? Will there be any test to check his math, science etc. levels before he gets admission? Or do they admit any student based on his/her age?

Since there is compulsory schooling, your son will be admitted to a school. I don't know how they determine, for students from systems incompatible to German schools, the level most sutable for them. It is not necessarily a "Gymnasium" - there are also other kinds of secondary school. So you should contact a school near you, or the local school authority ("Schulamt") to ask about this, and also about which nearby schools offer the preparatory classes ("Förderklasse") for foreign kids.

Hi beppi, many thanks, we will try to communicate with the school by email.
