Hello to all,
My wife and I are in our 70s and retired in USA and soon moving to Lyon, France...upon arrival, we will not be working/employed. We will be considered "pensioners" by French health care authorities. We are hoping someone can refer us to reliable information in English about French requirements for health insurance for older "pensioners" like us....we do understand the need to apply for French public health insurance after arrival but are still confused about the need for and cost of private health insurance. Hope you can help us understand...thanks.

Hello, the best is to call the american ambassy in France maybe..

As a resident you should be able to apply for a carte vitale, then you will be insured.

French health care is way cheaper than in the usa.. A root canal here cost less than a hundred euros for someone who is not in the health care systeme, yet.. a visit to a generalist may cost you 23 euros I believe... so do not stress to much about this, it is way cheaper than in the usa ! And drugs are much cheaper, most of them free when you get your vitale card.

Thank you poodlefan...we feel the same way in the USA...Fluffy2560 and her friends spend their days chasing/heckling me around this forum...without once asking me why I have made similar posts on other country forums.

Usually, members show interest in a country or at least two countries and they give a clear explanation about their expatriation project. In this way, we are able to help them efficiently.
