Retirement Move

grandestatesalesllc

Bonjour! I am considering moving to France for my retirement. What are some areas that have expat communities in and where might I best acclimate as a newcomer?

The best place to live in France is the Principality of Monaco.

Which criteria are important to you beyond an expat community? I'd start with those, then see if there is an active expat community in the locations you come up with.

Some resources to consider are:

Ibanista - this is one of several videos on choosing a place. https://youtu.be/qbYdVcIdMUs?si=PXq6xugAMPENAcu6

Johnny Benoit - Lots of good information wrapped in excellent humor. https://youtu.be/kVNzNN4-eNY?si=In1vW0srOuNH7mVz

American To France - looks at places to live along with financial considerations. https://youtu.be/ad-f6lYHbQs?si=fSnYnXLdjG_Wq26Z

There are more videos on their channels and more channels about locations in France, but I think these are a good place to start.

Monaco is not in France and is an independent and sovereign country! Monaco is an exceptionally expensive country to live in, consistently ranked as the most expensive city-state in the world. The high cost is primarily driven by an extremely limited supply of land and immense demand from high-net-worth individuals, leading to some of the highest real estate prices on the planet.

I agree that step 1 of your journey is to undertake a serious self-evaluation of your personality, tolerances and objectives.  France has everything from beaches to farms to mountains, so choices are vast.

I would also ask how much time, if any, have you spent here?  Do you speak French?  What's your tolerance (or desire) for social isolation or awkwardness?  Are you currently living in a rural place or city?   Will you get a car or need to be where there is excellent public transport?  Will you leave assets in the US intact, or sell everything with no regrets? What's your budget?

There aren't many of us that can leave it all behind, pick a spot, stumble through, start exploring with no concern if it's hard or regrets if we change our mind. I'm new on this journey but the one solid location advice I can give is this; Just make sure you know if you need to get a car or not, and where the nearest grocer is!

I should imagine that wherever you decide upon, there will be a welcoming community. I don't want to go off-topic, but would like to point youin the direction of***which will give you detailed information about how to buy your property to ensure that your wishes are followed when it comes to inheritance...... I also have an equally detailed book explaining the healthcare system here (which will be released imminently).... wherever you end up, good luck and happy retirement X
