Family moving to Bayonne in need of advice on schools etc

byraskaplig9r

We are moving to Bayonne with kids 16,13 and 10 in August and are currently looking for schools. Has anybody got advice? The children do not speak fluently French and would be in need of extra support. We start looking for schools so we can decide where it is best and most practical to live, but any advice on this would also be handy.  We will not have a car so everything in walking distance is practical. A fully private school is not an option. But a sous contrat would do. I have heard it is even easier to get in to if the housing is not fully and permanently sorted out way beforehand.

I would enroll your kids in french class now, like right now. Give them a leg up even if it is just 4 months. They will really benefit.

Read up on and be prepared for jumping through bureaucratic hoops. They are impressive. They cover things like:

Getting a bank account.

Getting a temporary phone.

Getting an apartment. (not count on using a

Getting an hebergement from the landlord.

Using the rental agreement, phone and Hebergement to get a phone account and a real phone.

Check compatibility so you can use your current phones with french chips.

Keep your foreign bank account and have a conversation with them about how you will need to interact with them from overseas.

Photocopy all your legal documents and keep separate from the originals.

Check up on the Tax Treaty between your home country and France.

If you have a PENSION, bring your pension account documents.

Be aware the bank, phone and rental agreement are INTERWOVEN, so you must line them all up.

Just a few ideas for you.

Hi there, Even if the kids are not 'fluent', whatever stage of their language journey would most likely benefit from being immersed in the local schools. It's unlikely that the Lycee for your eldest would be within walking distance of the home and schools for the other two, but the schools are serviced by school bus routes. I have written a book dealing with the entire process for registering children in all levels of school, what to do, what you need, what to expect, paperwork..... pretty much everything (We cam to France with our 5yr old son who is now 25 and a local fireman (he had 'Bonjour' when we arrived, and was essentially as fluent as any 6yr old needs to be within a year. Our daughter has been through the entire system up to 'Premier' where she is now, having been born here 17 years ago. At this moment in time, the book s with my editor (along with my similarly detailed book explaining the healthcare system.... if you would like me to let you know when it's live, let me know,it will be linked as a series with my Property buying guide for International buyers (Here's the UK link as I don't know what your nationality is.... [link moderated] ) If you'd like me to notify you when the book's released, please feel free to drop me a n email to [link moderated] .... Good luck with the relocation, Craig
