Hi,
I will be travelling to amsterdam/belgium at the end of march and am looking for someone in belgium to pick me up a case (or two!) of westy 12. I will (generously) pay you for your efforts (expenses of travel- I respect the monks policy of not selling the beer to a third party).

Please let me know if anyone around the area would be willing to meet me.

That stuff is worth it's weight in gold. We are Belgian expats living in London. My husband has an uncle living at the sea side. He went to pick up some bottles for us recently. We're actually going back to Belgium to pick them up next week. Unfortunately my husband will not part with them.

Good luck and santé! (means good health in French and it's how we toast in Belgium)

Personally I think it's a highly over rated beer, I think any of the other Belgian Trappists or even the Dutch effort "La trappe" are as good a beer as Westie..
Given the choice of what most Belgian Cafe's would genreally stock I'd recommend Karmelite Tripel. (I'm a publican over here so I have sampled my fair share of beers)
I'm sure someone will be willing to make the trip but I don't think my moped would make it that far

I am Flemish but still where I am from santé is used by everyone. It is even accepted by Van Dale dictionary and the little green book (Woordenlijst Nederlandse taal).

Alternatively proost and schol are also accepted Flemish/Dutch words.

Flemish people using a French word: there's nothing more balanced than that, I think

My point still stands about the beer though.
I've not found a lot of beers better than Karmeliet here so far

I would love to be able to agree with you to call it an overrated beer- but first I must try it!!

Love trappist ales and I have tried every other one available. One of my personal favs is rochefort 8

Don't get me wrong,
Westvleteren is a very nice beer, I just think that even with the rarity aspect it's not "as" good a beer as is made out to be.

If you want to try a few different ones I can recommend a couple;

Karmeliet Tripel
La Chouffe
Grimbergen Goud (Gold)the blonde and the tripel are also nice
If you like the darker beers try out Palm Dubbel,Chimay Blue and most any of the Christmas beers when in season (particularly Leffe Noel)
And of course you have to try a Kwak, if only for the novelty of the glass.
