How to bring my 5yo nephew to Belgium

durmazaysegul10

Hello,

I am from Turkey and I wanna bring my 5yo  nephew to Belgium to live with me.

I am single (so only 1 income) -no child.

Mother and father are alive but we are thinking that my nephew can have a better future here with me.

I know, it will be most likely difficult and take some time but I don’t know where to start.

Does anyone know anything about these kinda topics? I appreciate 🙏🏻

It is possible BUT:

  1. You must prove the child is financially and emotionally dependent on you and that no one else (including his parents) can care for him.

  1. You also must demonstrate why it is in his specific "best interest" to live with you in Belgium rather than with his parents in Turkey.

You could also adopt him, but that is a lengthy process:

  1. As a single person in Belgium, you are legally allowed to adopt if you are at least 25 years old and at least 15 years older than the child.
  2. This involves a lengthy social investigation and a court decree in both Turkey and Belgium.
  3. Turkey requires an unmarried person to be at least 30 years old and have at least an 18-year age difference with the child.
  4. To sponsor a family member, you must earn a minimumnet income of €2,323.10 per month (as of 2025).
  5. Since both parents are alive, you must have their notarised, translated, and legalised consent for the child to settle in Belgium.
  6. You must provide proof of "adequate housing" (registered rental contract or ownership).
  7. You must prove that he will be covered by your Belgian health insurance (mutuality) upon arrival.

Finally, the Belgian Immigration Office decides on a case-by-case basis, and there is no guarantee you will be successful, with no refunds of any money that you have spent in the process.

You should contact a specialised immigration lawyer or the Myria (Federal Migration Centre) for a detailed assessment of your humanitarian case, and if possible. These applications can take 9 to 15 months to process.
