Your Experience With Power Outages

Aidan in HCMC

Well, Oct 5th, and today here in Phu Quoc we experienced our third outage... for the month!

Today was for 8 hours, Oct 2nd was for 12.5 hours, and Oct 1st was for 6 hours. Can't wait to hear EVN's proposed rate-hike pitch.

There were also outages when I lived in Thai Nguyen, but I recall them being only every second-month or so, usually for a full day (~12 hours).

Are other members experiencing similar interruptions in electricity supply?

Can you get solar for backup? I see them more and more, little ones powering up small items like phones, lights etc.

Good alternative, but I'm going to go old-school and get myself a gas powered generator. Maybe today.

Biggest inconvenience for me with these power outages is the loss of power for the fridge, the freezer, and the air-conditioners.

Maybe build a mini concrete and iron bars enclosure first? I personally think the generator is your best option, but I have to believe that as soon as no one is home It will almost certainly grow legs...

Agreed on the legs, so it'll live indoors when not in use. They're not too heavy when the gas tank is empty.

I've got my eye on a Honda 3500w, something along the lines of...

...but all I'm finding locally are no-name knockoffs. Looks like I may have to order online.

Recent events affecting the Ha Tien-Phu Quoc submarine electricity cable have resulted in an island-wide blackout.

Power was cut here from 3:00PM Saturday Nov 29th, until 3:00AM today, Dec 1st (36 hours). Cut again at 3:00PM this afternoon. For how long, I've no idea.

Repairs will reportedly take up to 1 month to complete. In the interim, EVN has rerouted available power to different regions of the island, enabling people to charge their phones, fill their water tanks etc.

There will continue to be rolling blackouts, with different regions being allotted times when there will be electricity available.

Yesterday,  Sunday Nov 30th at about 8:00AM, I went in search of a generator. Purchased a 7KW Chinese Briggs&Stratton knock-off for 15 million VND. More than I wanted to pay, and more wattage than I thought I'd need, but since choices are limited on the island and because I didn't want to wait any longer, I bought it.

I'm wondering how long the current cut will last. Man, that generator is loud, even at ~25 feet from the house.

Hopefully it doesn't grow legs.

I'm guessing there's going to be a great increase in generator thefts

I wish it would grow legs. That way I wouldn't have to carry it down 4 irregular shaped concrete steps, drag its wheels over soft soil 25 feet out into the garden, and then back again each cycle. It lives indoors, tucked away in the laundry room.

The weight of a 7KW generator makes for a pain-in-the-r's setup routine.

GF tried on Sunday to help me. I'll just say that she wasn't a help, so we'll not be doing that again.

Next outage is scheduled for 3:00PM - 10:00PM today.
