As with retirement at home, this also needs (careful) planning. You are not doing with buying a ticket and hopping on a plane

You need to focus on a few things like VISA eligibility and qualifications/requirements, healthcare, tax situation, property ownership legislation, language and the political and climate situation in your location. Most retirees come from totally different situations at home and, in my experience in 80% of the time, are often surprised.

I advise everybody to read in on the cultural aspects as well. Preparation is half the work!!!

All of these, apart from reading in on cultural aspects, I did not do as I moved here for work within 2 weeks after the contract was signed. Had to learn on the go and that was not always easy. But working as an expat of being a retiree moving here is very different, there is many support to make your new life easy, this is non existent for 'solo' retirees

My 2 cents, don't let it scare you..... just take a step back and review and check all points because when you leave for good, bridges are often burned to easy and to quick

The country where I come from has a website with links and steps to do when you want to emigrate... check with the authority in your country

Arrived in Chiang Mai in 2016. I connect up with family and friends mainly through Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.  At my age (80) and with all the turmoil in the world I have no desire to leave Thailand or fly anywhere.
