Searching for manufacture of Bulldog small tools

Richard Bower MBE

Dear Taiwan Ex Pats,

I am searching for the manufacturer of Bulldog Small tools in Taiwan. I have a pair of long handled loppers and a small nut has sheared stopping the ratchet system from working.

The company in the Uk will not supply me with this very small swivel nut but I learnt that the loppers are manufactured in Taiwan so I thought I would try to obtain a nut by contacting the Association of hand Tool Manufacturers in Taiwan but I have sadly not received a response, so I do not know the name of the company in Taiwan.

Of course this is a classic example of 'built in obsolescence' and as a retired Recycling Officer for Cornwall County Council  I could not let this pass without an attempt to obtain said swivel nut which I would then fit. Its very small measuring not more than 2/3 centimetres long.

I would be very grateful if one of your members would like to take up this challenge on my behalf please.

For your information I was voted Recycling Officer of the Year in 2001 received a Life Time Achievement Award from the British Waste industry and then an MBE from Her Majesty the Queen in 2007 for Services to the Environment. So going the extra mile is

I am not sure which category to use so I have chosen NEW MEMBERS, I hope this message will go to a relevant member.

With regards and in anticipation,

Richard Bower.

Dear Richard,

You have posted your enquiry here in the England Forum where mostly it is foreigners posting questions about moving to England from overseas and questions on other challenges that they may face such as Visas etc.

Actually one of my friends who like me hails from Plymouth (we are both surfing fanatics since the 1970's and spent our summers surfing all around Cornwall and North Devon. And I even did my thesis on the geology of the Land's End peninsula. Well, my friend is a Director of a District Council but I think his job also covers what you did, except he doesn't have an MBE. He worked at Skewjack in Sennen if you've heard of it.

OK, I happen to have lived in Taiwan for a couple of years and at one time was buying and selling heaving engineering plants (redundant iron and steel factories) and selling Taiwanese turnkey factories for producing things such as biscuits, sanitary pads etc etc.

So look, I do not know Bulldog Small Tools and I no longer have any contact with engineering firms, but what I can do is ask one of my Taiwanese friends if they could find out any information.

However, as a fan of "Wheeler Dealers", I've seen many times when they need a part and can't find it so they bring the broken part to a specialist metal working company with lots of high spec machinery and get it made there for not very much money. So that is one of my suggestions, to have the nut made locally by such a company.

Let me know what you think.

OK my friend has tried but it is actually very difficult to find this company. This is because Bulldog Small tools might just be their name for marketing but the company itself might come under a different name. Also, tools like this are very probably mostly made in China even though it may say made in Taiwan. There is of course a company called Bulldog Tools that makes garden shears etc but they are based in Essex in the UK.

My friend pointed out another company in Taiwan called Winland Garden Tools. But I guess it is a different company. You can see on their website:
