Google Voice

vehicross100

I just returned and brought back a unlocked US iphone with a Verizon plan which includes the international $12 day pass if activated.

Before I left the US I downloaded Google Voice and used it a few times locally in the US.

Today I tried to test the app by calling a relative in the US.

I turned off Cellular then dialed through the Google Voice app. The call went through. After ending the call I received a couple messages and alerts even though cellular was turned off that I had activated the $12 international pass for the day.

If anyone has knowledge about how to properly use app without activating the Verizon international day pass I would greatly appreciate any tips or advice.

Im guessing that perhaps I should have put phone in airplane mode or turned off the ESim. Idk…. Any Suggestions ?

I had Google Voice (just deleted it a few days ago), but never tried calling while in the PI.  Instead I signed up with Tello's US$7/mo plan.  I used it several times on my last trip to the PI and it worked great.  No surprise fees - only the per min I was expecting (albeit, I only used the SMS service to receive bank codes a few times).

Thanks for that info, promising.

As far as Google Voice I think I figured it out by using my other friend Google search.

I found that inside Google voice is a setting which can be toggle between Cellular or Wifi.

Mine was set on Cellular only. So I quickly remedied that.

Next time when I test I will just place Phone on Airplane Mode, Turn on wifi and make a call to see if it automatically kicks in the Verizon international pass charge or not.

I did receive a Code via sms from my Calpers, so now I know I can.

Hopefully it will also work with my financial institutions using 2FA when needed.

I've used Google Voice for 2FA for the last 3 yrs many, many times in both the Philippines and Thailand. For many financial institutions and a lot of other entities also. I use it for both making and receiving calls to the US. It's the only thing I use as I don't have any other phone plan. Can also call between other countries such as I can call the Philippines from Thailand for a per minute fee. Fee differs for each country. Just put some credit on your account. Google Voice has worked flawlessly for me over the last 3 yrs while in SE Asia. I just use Wifi and Google Voice.

Google Voice works flawlessly for me and my wife too for the institutions we need that send OTP codes. However, I added a real Google fi paid USA cell number that works in the Philippines. Reason: Many people say GV doesn’t work for them. So I have both googke voice and true cell network google fi and both work.  I have heard that sone banks who usually reject VOIP still accept GV because of the excellent security measures google has in place. Maybe.

I think I have heard people say it doesn't work with Capital One. I use 2 FA all the time with Capital One. I think where the confusion may lie is that when you first open an account with Capital One, you can't use a Google Voice # or other VOIP# to verify yourself. You must have a registered mobile # or have them verify you using a different method. Since I didn't even own a cellular phone when I first opened my account we used a different method to verify myself. (Don't remember which method) . But once you were verified, then you could use your Google Voice # for 2FA.

Google voice always worked for our Capital One credit card account. If it didn't, we would have had no way to make online payments until we got Google fi. At my age, I don't give a heck if they were to make it impossible for me to use their card and pay them online from the Philippines. But I use Google Fi for their OTPs and GV also works.
