"Heat index of up to 44°C seen to affect 12 areas April 19, says Pagasa"
By: Luisa Cabato - Reporter - 08:10 AM April 19, 2024
MANILA, Philippines — Heat index in 12 areas of the country was forecast to reach the “danger” level of up to 44 degrees Celsius on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.
According to Pagasa, these areas are:
Barangay Ambulong in Tanauan, Batangas – 44 degrees Celsius
Aborlan, Palawan – 44 degrees Celsius
Dagupan City, Pangasinan – 43 degrees Celsius
Sangley Point, Cavite – 43 degrees Celsius
Puerto Princesa City, Palawan – 43 degrees Celsius
Roxas City, Capiz – 43 degrees Celsius
Iloilo City, Iloilo – 43 degrees Celsius
Dumangas, Iloilo – 43 degrees Celsius
Bacnotan, La Union – 42 degrees Celsius
Tuguegarao City, Cagayan – 42 degrees Celsius
Central Bicol State University of Agriculture in Pili, Camarines Sur – 42 degrees Celsius
Dipolog, Zamboanga del Norte – 42 degrees Celsius
Based on Pagasa’s current system, a “danger” level is when the heat index is 42 to 51 degrees Celsius, which could cause heat cramps, exhaustion, and even heat stroke with prolonged exposure. Pagasa defines heat index as “a measure of the contribution that high humidity makes to abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body’s ability to cool itself.”

NGCP issues yellow, red alerts for Luzon grid; Visayas grid on yellow alert
MANILA, Philippines — For the fourth consecutive day, the Luzon and Visayas power grids are set to encounter red and yellow alerts on Friday, according to the National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP).
In separate advisories, the NGCP reported that these grid statuses were initiated due to forced outages at certain power plants and reduced capacity operations at others.
The Luzon Grid will be under red status during the following period:
3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
6 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The Luzon grid is scheduled to be under a yellow status during the following period:
12 noon to 3 p.m.
4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, the yellow alert for the Visayas grid will be in effect from 12 noon to 4 p.m. and then again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
As of writing, the Luzon grid has an available capacity of 13,954 megawatts (MW) against a peak demand of 13,127 MW.
On the other hand, the Visayas grid has an available capacity of 2,484 MW against a peak demand of 2,504 MW.
A red alert is declared when the power supply is insufficient to meet consumer demand, and the transmission grid's operational requirements cannot be fully met.
A yellow alert is announced when the operating margin is too narrow to adequately cover the transmission grid's contingency needs.

A temperature of 42.2 degrees Celsius was recorded in Tuguegarao, Cagayan Valley on April 22, 1912, and May 11, 1969.

Heat Index: SO MISLEADING. In real life, you don't even know what it is except an inflated version of actual, current temperatures.
Heat Index (HI)
This is not based on actual science. It is one man's estimation of how the combination of temperature and humidity makes you "feel". In practice it gives a highly exaggerated apparent temperature not rooted in reality; a temperature of 33C at 90% RH gives a heat index of 53C! Climate alarmists love those fake results that indicate falsely elevated temperatures which help "prove" their point of global warming.
Here is the actual calculation using a formula *not* derived through scientific means but rather by the intuition of one person, meteorologist Lans P. Rothfusz, and accepted by the US National Weather Service circa 1990. These are weather forecasters, not physicists. If you want to know your comfort level, just look at real temperature and relative humidity as was done in the past. Heat Index gives people grossly inflated temperatures that simply do not exist.
The Heat Index Equation
The computation of the heat index is a refinement of a result obtained by multiple regression analysis carried out by Lans P. Rothfusz and described in a 1990 National Weather Service (NWS) Technical Attachment (SR 90-23). The regression equation of Rothfusz is
HI = -42.379 + 2.04901523*T + 10.14333127*RH - .22475541*T*RH - .00683783*T*T - .05481717*RH*RH + .00122874*T*T*RH + .00085282*T*RH*RH - .00000199*T*T*RH*RH
where T is temperature in degrees F and RH is relative humidity in percent. HI is the heat index expressed as an apparent temperature in degrees F. If the RH is less than 13% and the temperature is between 80 and 112 degrees F, then the following adjustment is subtracted from HI:
ADJUSTMENT = [(13-RH)/4]*SQRT{[17-ABS(T-95.)]/17}
where ABS and SQRT are the absolute value and square root functions, respectively. On the other hand, if the RH is greater than 85% and the temperature is between 80 and 87 degrees F, then the following adjustment is added to HI:
ADJUSTMENT = [(RH-85)/10] * [(87-T)/5]
The Rothfusz regression is not appropriate when conditions of temperature and humidity warrant a heat index value below about 80 degrees F. In those cases, a simpler formula is applied to calculate values consistent with Steadman's results:
HI = 0.5 * {T + 61.0 + [(T-68.0)*1.2] + (RH*0.094)}
In practice, the simple formula is computed first and the result averaged with the temperature. If this heat index value is 80 degrees F or higher, the full regression equation along with any adjustment as described above is applied.
The Rothfusz regression is not valid for extreme temperature and relative humidity conditions beyond the range of data considered by Steadman.

Or live on the beach and have lots of A/C and self contained power even better.
Yesterday got to 34/5C which is warm for working in but living in the house with A/C then you really notice the difference especially as we get older.
I like Baguio and the services, temp but I love the beach better.
Cheers, Steve.
@danfinn
Yes HI really means "feels like".
OMO but global warming is a fact and whether man made or part of natures cycles we are seeing the results and learning to live with it.
Cheers, Steve.

Global warming and cooling occurs. In the USA during cold temperatures they manufacture a similar term to make the temp seem lower than it really is based on real temp plus wind and call it wind chill factor.so in places where it rarely reaches 0 F, NC cities are often -10 F using this invention. For heat, the same idea of course but using a different formula. So today there are warnings on FB that temps in Manila will reach 38.5C but checking weather sources we see maximum 33C which is not unusual or indicative of global warming as 38.5C.
"Climate" seems to have replaced "COVID" for propagation of fear porn and I suppose I can foresee climate emergencies that force lower fuel consumption and even climate lockdowns. I agree, Steve, there is climate change but I also believe that climate change agendas should not be force-fed using trickery like "heat index". If there really were such an emergency, they wouldn't have to invent new ways to show higher alleged apparent "temperatures". As far as your off- grid I am *extremely* envious and to the point where I may break down and install my own 10kw off grid system. Your success is not unnoticed! Logically I might say I will not live long enough to realize financial ROI but for me, ROI is not the main factor. What we want here is reliability and immunity from utility "brownouts" which are quite ridiculous here and in some other provinces.

Nice post without 100 lines of explanation that goes over my head.
Thanks Dan.
Climate change has replaced many issues and catastrophes over the last 20/30 years and as said is mans global domination causing this or simply cyclic as it has been for millions of years, millions more to come, we are new comers, the human species have only been here for a speck in time and the way we are going will be snuffed out like millions of other species, Mother earth is in control.
I procrastinated for years here as the prices were extremely ridiculous, now they are simply expensive, say 5/6 years ago for the system we wanted was an 8/9 year ROI. 6 months ago when I finally bit the bullet was mostly because of the constant black outs and running the generator as well as 10/11K power bills per month and my wants and vision was to run plenty of A/C and no interruptions and not a 20/25K power bill for a crappy service.
We are running 4 to 5 A/C's through the day and 2 are big and utilizing the solar input we are generating an average of P750 per day or P22.500 per month or P 270K per year but say at P240K per year equals well under 6 years for ROI. LOL, like you I hope I'm still around in 6 years but should be. The benefits? No power interruptions, No bills and adding a heap of value to your home. I look at it this way Dan and all good if you have the spare bucks.
We have invested money in term deposits earning 5% interest, superannuation earning 10 to 15% average.
I took some funds out of our investments earning 5% and stuck it into solar that will return 16% minimum and not taxable. For me ended up a no brainer.
Cheers, Steve.

No explanation Bob, is what it is and deal with it we must.
Cheers, Steve.
I simply can feel when it is too hot for me and when it is just seek shade or go indoors. i am currently in Bulacan with my girlfriend at her property and even her and her family are saying how hot it currently is and they stay in the shade or indoors when they can.
Funny thing is I am sleeping better here with 2 fans running at night than I did in 4 star hotels with air con. Bottom line is my body tells me when to seek shade and go indoors and I do not need any complicated equasion to tell me.

True Bob. Or could it be that Cherryann has a gorgeous Filipina laying next to him?🤔
I once dated a particularly attentive Filipina in Manila who enjoyed fanning me in bed with her chinese hand fan 😁
