Retiring in Pondicherry

Hi all,

Apologies if that question has already been asked. American couple wanting to retire to Pondicherry. Is that possible? What type of visa is required?

Thank you in advance for your help.

For long-term retirement in India, there isn't a specific “retirement visa” for foreign nationals. A tourist/e-Tourist visa is intended for visiting and sightseeing rather than establishing permanent residence, and the available stay limits depend on the visa type. The U.S. is currently eligible for India’s e-Tourist Visa, but for someone planning to actually relocate to Pondicherry, it would be better to check the regular visa categories and current requirements with the Indian Mission or FRRO before making plans. Visa rules can change, so the official Indian Visa Online portal is the safest place to confirm the appropriate option.

Pondicherry sounds like a lovely place to retire. Visa rules can depend on your situation, so I’d check the latest Indian visa requirements or contact the Indian consulate for the most accurate information.
