Considering moving to Cairo

Rachaelquinnegan

Hi there- We are considering a move to Cairo. We live in the US now (since 1992), but are originally from Ireland. We have 2 daughters age 3 and 5. I guess I'd like to know if you think this is a good idea for a family, considering recent news.
I lived in Cairo (Maadi) as a teenager in the 1980s and loved it, although I remember it was unsafe at times for woman. Also- the driving was a little Mad Max. (; But generally it was an interesting and beautiful place. I would love to know how things may have changed?
What is the housing like? Social life? How is it for kids? I've been reading a lot about petty crime and harrassment. Where is the safest place to live? What is rent like for 3 or 4 bedroom apartments/houses? Any info at all would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

hello racheal :) mostly the country stable and safe of course maadi is still a nice place i think a big apartment like wat ur searching for might cost about 4000-5000 per month depends on the area could be more in my opinion best place to stay in cairo would be el rehab its really safe and organized and clean and u will find diversity of people from diffrent nationalities like maadi but more organized and no beggers its about 40 minutes away from maadi by car through the ring road and about 30 minutes away from heliopolis and nasr city and best thing in el rehab its not really crowded and more or less quiter and safer than the rest of cairo i lived here for 6 years so far and i am loving it and i have a couple of friends with kids here they love it and its a really nice place to raise kids :) the social life here not as active as maadi and downtown though its increasingly getting better because of the 5th settlement where alot of nice places are opening now like "meeting point" and "downtown" they are really nice places in 5th settlment and i think at any rate its a nice place to stay and if u wanted to go downtown or zamalek or maadi at anytime u have the option to :)

I second your opinion about El Rehab ..... not too far from downtown and Maadi or East Cairo (Nasr City, Heliopolis ...etc.), 15 minutes from the airport, very safe, diverse, clean and you rarely need to go out (all services are there .... food grocery shopping banks workshops ......etc.)
