Questions about life in Lubumbashi

Hi everyone

An opportunity has come up for us as a family to move to Lubumbashi.

We are no strangers to life as expats in other countries (Namibia, Botswana, Saudi Arabia). So I have a few questions about living in Lubumbashi as expats from South Africa.

General safety, how safe is Lubumbashi. I’ve seen people mention that your phone might get grabbed if walking around with it etc? Are house break-ins common?

Housing: are there compounds? Best websites to look at for houses to rent?

Are fresh produce always available? We’ve lived in countries where you could not find tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers etc for long periods of time.

British school of Lubumbashi, anyone know if this is a good school?

General health, is malaria a major concern in Lubumbashi? Are there good doctors and a good hospital?

Hi. You and your family will be safe if you can consider some of the rules, just like you did in the other countries you visited. I will suggest you some but obviously your experience remains the best indicator :

Choose carefully the area to live in, preferably don’t be too far from town. It guarantees 90% safety.
you can walk with your phone but hide it as soon as you spot the street kids or in an overcrowded area. Preferably, use a vehicle to move around.
the British school is known as on of the best schools in Lubumbashi though I have no personal experience.
You will find very good places in Lubumbashi and enjoy the DRC. Don’t worry about tomatoes and others, you’ll find them fresh everywhere, Lubumbashi has the kind of shops you’d love to buy your groceries from.
