My wife and I are contemplating a move to southern Spain in about 3.5 years. I am retired Navy and we need information regarding the base services available to retirees. We are looking into the areas around Malaga to reside. I would like to lease a boat to live on for a while until we find what suits our fancy. Any and all information is greatly appreciated. We will not be looking for any kind of employment. We presently live in Pensacola, Florida. My email is ***. Thank you for any information you can provide.

You say you are retired navy, but did not indicate what country.  But you do say you live in Pensacola, so an assumption would be that you are US Navy.

Regardless:  There are essentially NO base services provided for US retirees.  IE, there is
1) No VA hospitals here
2) No hospitals/medical providers will accept any US insurance (unless it covers international services)
3) There is no US Social Security office, and Spain will not provide you with the equivalent of SS, not unless you obtain Spanish citizenship

Having said that:
a) I am a US citizen, retired, and I live here.  I receive my SS into a US bank account, then transfer it here, no problem
b) I pay for a pretty good medical insurance, here, and it serves me well.  And is much less expensive than equivalent in US
c) Cost of living can vary significantly.  Madrid and Barcelona are, I believe, the highest; but you can live on much less in other cities.  I live in Valencia and find housing/food to be very affordable.  Housing, for example, seems to be about 25% to 35% less than Barcelona, where my 18 yr old son lives.  Some places like Murcia are even more cost effective
c) You may find less expensive places in the world to live, many Americans like to go to Costa Rica, Panama, Philippines; but when you factor in "level of development/civilization/corruption" vs cost of living, I believe there is a much lower level of compromise in Spain (or Portugal) than those countries

Good luck to you in your quest

Hi and welcome to the Forum.

There is a US Naval base at Rota; whether it has the facilities or the ability to offer you any retired service assistance I don't know.  It does have a base hospital; this link will take you to their website.

Hope this helps.
