Best areas to live in Glasgow

Hi there!!

I am moving to Glasgow in a few months and I am wondering if I could get a couple suggestions on the best areas to live, in regards to safety, work and leisure.

Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Forum.

I'm assuming you have sorted out the immigration issues, so except to say at the top of the page is a link tour Handy Tools section; if you select that, you'll get access to our expat guides; these contain Information that may help you plan your journey.

What's attracted you to Glasgow if you have concerns about safety, work and leisure?  As a place, it's not that different from any other UK City, it has good and bad everywhere; many of the old tower-blocks where it was a bit rough are either gone or going shortly.  The only thing I can think of that is significantly different about Glasgow is that there is a smell of religious intolerance about the place.

Hope this helps.

I think Edinburgh would ok in terms of leisure, work

I love the Southside of Glasgow from about Clarkston to Newton Mearns. Get close to a railway station so you have buses or trains as an option. Taxi fare won't hurt so much either. Going further out to East Kilbride or Hamilton means more commuting time, an hour between buses and double the taxi fare. I can't speak about the other parts of Glasgow as have only lived in a few suburbs. If you want to get a car, the closer to the city, the harder it will be to find parking outside your building, you might have to park blocks from where you live. Use Google street view to see what the parking situation will be like. Leisure around Glasgow is amazing, bustling city or beautiful calm in parks and countryside. Lots more specialised jobs in Edinburgh and higher rents. Glasgow has heaps of job opportunities and rent is so much more affordable. Consider paying slightly more for rent to get into an area with less deprivation (which sometimes means higher anti-social behaviour but not always).
