New members of the Malaysia forum, introduce yourselves here - 2018

Hi everyone!

I'm Bintang, recently moved from Jakarta to work here in KL.

Looking forward to meet fellow expats from this forum, hit me up for meetup over drinks or coffee.

Happy New Year, everyone!

My goal for this year was that I would investigate and come up with our retirement strategy.  My wife and I are in our early 50s and with no kids I believe anyway that we can retire sooner without any real issues.

We could probably retire easily in San Francisco, my hometown, but since my wife is Malaysian Chinese it was always my crazy idea that we move back to her country in retirement.  Frankly, my wife (and I, really) loves San Francisco but the idea of living in both areas of the world is intriguing to us and with this MM2H program we think we can actually do it.  My wife had given up her Malaysian citizenship to come to the US so without such a program I wouldn't be here typing away.  My wife has a brother in Singapore and her family is in Johor Bahru.

I look forward to engaging with you all!!!

Hello Amila,

My name is Chaib from Canada. I am a French teacher and I plan to move to Malaysia in the next months. As you just moved from Indonesia to KL, may I ask you how did you get the work permit to be able to work in Malaysia ? And do you know if it is possible I look for a job after my arrival there ?

Thank you for your advice!
Chaib

HI everyone,
I move to KL recently for work
Looking forward to being part of the expat community here.

Cheers!

Hi Chaib!

My working permit was prepared and done by my new workplace. If you already have a job here, just ask HR in your company in Malaysia to help you getting the work permit, just like how i got it. If you haven't gotten a job in Malaysia, you better ask Malaysian Embassy in Canada, so that you could know what documents you have to prepare in order to get your working permit.

I hope it helps!

Hi Everyone!

I am currently based in Cape Town, South Africa, but would love to make a move to Kuala Lumpur.

My wife and I visited the country last July and we absolutely fell in love with the place and therefore considered the move.

I am a Business Analyst with 8 years work experience and my wife is a Physiotherapist with 7 years experience.

Any advice on how to find a job there as a foreigner?

Thanks and regards

Girlfriend is from Malaysia. (lesbian relationship) She wants to move home eventually. I want to know if this life plan will work for us.... and  I wouldn't mind never seeing snow again in my life. I was with her in KL and Singapore three weeks ago. She is flying back to the US in a few weeks.

More complex topics I will ask in this forum are things like:
*Has MY ever been know to revoke visas of foreigners it finds out are LGBT?
*details of any [very] rare situations where MY has acknowledged same-sex marriages from foreign governments for spousal visas. (e.g. Hong Kong has done so for years)
*tips for hiding a second citizenship from MY. (I want her to finally apply for US citizenship before we leave the US and she loses her years of consecutive permanent residency.)
*hints on what constitutes an expert for PR visa. (Can one show speaking at industry events with significant career experience, and moderately high income, or example?)

Hello,
We leave on 6 th March for Penang. We plan to stay 6 months to give us an idea if we would like to live full time. Our first step I guess is to find a real estate agent to show us some reasonable accommodation so we can look around and check out the various things Penang (George Town area) has to offer. We would love to be involved with table tennis and tennis. We are active retirees and would like to socialise with Expats  and locals.

Hello,

My husband and myself  are coming to Penang on 6th March 2019 for six months. Are you able to recommend a Real Estate agent that could help us in Penang for fully furnished accommodation?

We are here to see if we like the place  in the view of living on a more permanent basis.

We are from Australia and have travelled some of the Asian countries over the past 10 years which we love.

We have never been to Penang and very briefly have seen KL and Langkawi a few years back.

Thank you

Diane and Richard

By all means take a look at what estate agents have to offer but be mindful the vast majority all over the world have no conscience and would sell their grandmother as a free housemaid if they thought there was a sale in it.
Malaysia, like many other countries in the region has a further issue - Anyone that sees a dollar becomes an estate agent for the day and will introduce themselves as such, probably looking around local places and telling the owner they have a fresh of the boat mug to sell/rent to.
I strongly recommend walking the streets to find out what's available without an agent, or a pseudo-agent.

Thank you for your advice We have taken note and hopefully will be careful.

Cheers Richard and Diane
