Hello everyone,

Being an expat in Bahrain can turn out to be a wonderful human, social or professional adventure... with potential moments of nostalgia and homesickness along the way.

What are your personal tips to prevent homesickness?

How do you deal with such feelings?

Are there shops or stores offering products from your home country in Bahrain? Or maybe venues with music and ambiance from your homeland?

Thanks for sharing your experience,

Priscilla

Trying to stay busy, but prefer to go out with people. It's hard when you don't know anybody :(.

Hello there, this may be happening with me only but I must say I stayed over many countries in GCC as well as in some African region including Sudan :D , the best part with Bahrain is "I do not feel Homesickness", and I wonder why :)

My Suggestion would be
1. Get yourself out make new friends
2. Choose some nice places to go out (I suggest Wahoo, some nice dine clubs)
3. Happy to assist

sometimes when l get home sickness like flu , cough , l make sure l take a lot of drinks especially warm drinks during morning hours , l put on heavy clothes during night and sometimes l do`nt normally move out of my apartment

Yes especially in Lulu supermarkets have agricultural products like sweet potatoes , avocados , mangoes etc
On part o entertainment l know of club in juffair called wranglers which offers Saturday nights for African music for example from east , west south and central music which makes us feel at home , sometime we organise as Ugandans book a  club  and we entertain our selves

Distractions are an expat's best friend. Some of my favorites are;

1) Video games- not for all, I know, but you can find some fun phone apps or online games too!

2) Books or web comics- There isn't a large selection in Bahrain, but you can download almost any book these days!

3) Hit the gym- Just being active can take your mind off things, but it is a bit toasty out there these days. Bonus points if you find a new show to watch and put those episodes on your phone and binge watch while you hit the treadmill

4) Audiobooks (audiobookbay for the win), news stations from your home country (NPR for those who hail from the Stateside), or Podcasts (Anybody else listen to the MagicTavern/Nightvale?) can be fun to listen to when you want to do a mini road trip or just have some chores to do around the house.

5) Comfort food- Ordering from talabat, hitting up Carrefour/Al Jazeera, or just learning how to copycat recipes from home can help

I find that the best cure is to just spam yourself with things from home for a day- watch a movie from your home country, pop off some emails or chat online with friends, and curl up in a wubby blanket with some comfort food. After a day of the the homeland injection- get out and do some fun stuff! Make yourself a Bahrain Bucketlist. =)
