Hello all,

First time posting anything. I was the kid who never paid attention when a company called Apple was making something called a personel computer...anyway, I am a Nurse Anesthetist and am considering moving my family to Riyadh, KAS.  I would appreciate your advice.  Specifically, housing (who Pays) how much does it cost? I hear alot about "compunds" what exactly are they?  Also, could anyone with youg children give me an idea about schools?  How is banking handeled?  How are western women adapting to life in KAS??  How safe is it?  I am starting from nothing and any bit of help would be greatly appreciated.  I don't want to reinvent the wheel!

RedGoblin

and you are in the right place to ask for advice. :)
welcome to the forum!

Now housing, compounds etc, have been discussed in length here, if you can just go through the earlier discussions you will find plenty of info.

Housing : This depends from company to company, Your offer letter should have mentioned something on this. Compounds, they are living areas that are enclosed by fences and such. Some of the rules applicable in the streets are lax inside them. Most compounds have a lot of entertainment facilities for the kids and adults alike which are sometimes not accessible outside. Compounds also usually have extra security and also vehicles to take you shopping and stuff, which can be very convenient for women, who are not allowed to drive.

Schooling for kids is available in riyadh since there is a significant no. of Americans living here with families. But I am sure that more info on that can be given by people with more experience here.

By banking, I am not sure to what aspect that you would be referring to, but electronic banking is present and remittances can be sent easily.

Adapting to life in Saudi Arabia. For most people it is a big culture shock. The place is conservative. Riyadh a bit more so, being the capital and all. It takes time to sink it all in. But then treat is like an adventure and you will be able to get through just fine.

Thanks for the information. I have spent the day reading previous threads and I apologize for having spewed the same questions which I am sure you and the others are tired of seeing and answering, however, your insight and honesty are used by others to HELP make important choices.  I get the feeling from reading what I have, the expatriot population is supportive to one another and that gives me another reason to make the plunge to KSA.  I have sent all the paperwork to the apporpriate sponsers and should hear something by the new year.

Hi Gasman, and welcome to the forum.  I must admit your screen name gave me a laugh-- made me think of a particular Seinfeld episode

I echo RG about your questions being answered time (and time again!) in previous threads but I will give you a bit of information that's very important:  be SURE your sponsor is covering the cost of your children's schooling.

Also, bear in mind that your compound will make the difference between hating it here and having a fairly easy time of it so be SURE you'll be housed in a WESTERN compound.

Best of luck!

Please No need to apologize.
I was just suggesting that you do read earlier posts so that you will understand much better. We are here to help you out and once you become an expatriot, then just return the favor on some other "possible new expat" :D:D

Looking forward to answer more of your Qs, and reading your posts..

Cheers!
