Hi,
Where I can get good dollar exchange rate? I have dollar to exchange into real. I am in Florianoplis.
I changed few dollars at GRU airport and shocked when they give 3.40 rate. Actual rate and given rate too high and low. If you want to buy then 1$ = 4.0R.
Can anyone suggest me that where I can get good rate?
Every 1000$ lost 100$ approx.
Thanks

James

I sell to friends and relatives for a better rate than Cambio. Your best bet is too ATM withdrawals rather than bringing the cash here. I did work a deal with a car dealership to pay some American dollars however.

Hi, everyone! My family will be visiting from the U.S. in July. Instead of bringing cash, should they just bring their VISA debit cards (cards that work at international banks) and withdraw money from Brazilian ATMs? Do most Brazilian banks allow foreigners to withdraw from their ATMs without any problems? Is this how they'll get the best rate of exchange on their dollars?

Also, I will be traveling to another country this month with just a few hundred US dollars, my Brazilian AMEX (for emergencies) and my Itaú Mastercard debit card. On the back of my Itaú card, there is a Maestro internacional symbol, so I'm assuming I'll be able to use it to withdraw money from foreign ATMs. I will go to my Itaú branch on Monday, advise them of my travel dates, and confirm that I can use my card abroad, but could anyone share any good or bad experiences they've had using their Brazilian bank cards abroad? How much do we get charged per transaction when we use our cards to purchase something abroad?

Thank you!

I was in Brazil in 2015 and I used my debit and credit card only to withdraw from ATM what I would do is check the exchange rate on line each day and see which day the real was  to the dollar so on the best days I would withdraw the funds from the U.S.. just fyi. If you can find out which bank your family uses and it will help with finding a machine to accept there debit card as there are two fees with withdrawal one for the bank and one for the foreign transaction fee, also have your relatives see if the bank will not charge the withdrawal fee as they will be abroad. Hope some of the info helps. There is a currency converter on Google and also some apps that will alert daily for the Brasil to USA rate for the best days to exchange.

Hi Victoria,

If your Itaú debit card is silver in color, then it is ONLY VALID IN BRAZIL, can't be used internationally.

If is gold in color, then it should be valid outside Brazil, but you should check with them to make absolutely certain before you travel. If valid outside of Brazil you should be able to use ATMs that have the MasterCard symbol.

I've never used my card (actually my wife's) outside Brazil so I can't tell you what their service charge for international ATM withdrawals would be.

Regarding your family's ATM debit card since it's VISA, it won't work in Itaú ATMs. I'd recommend Bradesco for withdrawals, but it can also be used at Banco do Brasil. They should not bring large amounts of cash. My US account is at TD Bank Jacksonville FLA and I have no problem withdrawing from either Bradesco or Banco do Brasil. Bradesco ATMs will allow a daily withdrawal limit of R$800 on weekdays, and one day (either Sat. or Sunday) on the weekend. I believe the daily limit at Banco do Brasil is R$700.

My card is ok for point of sale debit card purchases anywhere in Brazil, depending on the machine the merchant uses. Some merchants only have a machine for VISA, others only MC but most places I've ever been have two machines so I have rarely ever had a problem. Your debit purchases may be subject to a daily limit, but it's not tied to your ATM withdrawal limit. They should make absolutely certain to advise their bank that they will be coming to Brazil and when BEFORE they travel. Many US banks will block a card for any further transaction the moment they see a Brazilian transaction on it.

Don't assume anything , my Brazilian card says visa and I believe it won't work outside of Brazil as thats what they told me
I believe Brazil has a 6% tax when you use your card abroad

Thank you, James! Thank you, Steve! I've missed this board! My husband and I recently bought a place and I've been busy working, renovating, furnishing, and decorating. Not enough hours in the day! So busy!
