Electricity - Converter?

Hello all,

I seem to recall from my previous stay in Paraguay that here in the U.S. we use AC, typically 120 V, and that Paraguay uses 220 or 240 DC? I vaguely seem to recall using my blow dryer and curling iron in Paraguay. I know I had a converter to plug these in at one time, just from a cheap Wal-Mart set, $10 for every continent or some such thing. Now, my memory is really bad on if I actually used this all the time. I also seem to remember my hair dryer shorting out... which could be due to electricity, or, well, it does happen eventually here too, with enough use.

I don't want to spend a fortune buying all these things new in Paraguay, but there's no point in bringing them if the electricity will short them out quickly. Does anyone know any more about this? Any suggestions? Thank you!!!

Wonderful. Thank you so much for the in-depth answer! Great to know now that it's close to packing time!

Good to know. I won't waste the space in my suitcase then!
