Orders from USA problem

Post new topic

Hi fellow expats,

I'm having a problem with my orders from USA. I order 2 months ago from Amazon USA some books and a month ago from Cadence Watches. Both Amazon and Cadence say I should contact the Customs Office from Budapest because maybe the packages are there. Honestly I don't even know who/where to call. My first visit was at the Postal Office but with no luck.

Any of you had the same problem? Thank you!

My experience of post from far away is that it can take months to appear in Hungary. I ordered a simple thing from Hong Kong, worth $5, which was not even subject to VAT or import duty in May 2013, sent through the normal post and it turned up just now, 2 months later!!

Thanks, at least I know I'm not the only one. The thing is that I came here from Bucharest. I was receiving packages ordered from Hong Kong in 3-4 weeks. Thanks!

Last year i ordered something from Canada which was then shipped to the US and via borderlinx.com to Hungary (with DHL Express). Customs and Duties were calculated and paid before shipping. Arrived within 10 days and no problems whatsoever. I can recommend that service.

Excellent! I wonder if they are as good going the otherways too?

Yes, when I moved back to Hungary from the US: Hungarian company didn't want to do even the simplest things correctly nor promptly. They acted like their job was to make obstructions (which - of course will be solved by them, attorneys, etc.). It is a form of ransom. You were lucky for you had a replacible, 5 buck value - so they let it pass. I just had my home broken in here in Budapest, my exotic reptiles taken and only three months later I found them in the Budapest Zoo -after I placed the on "WANTED" list - the thieves took them from the blackmarket. Expense, police reluctance, complications, etc. The thieves are known, confessed, but they are at large and trying again soon. The drug debths are accumulating - so they will not rest. Thanks, these and similar things are the reasons for myseries created.
Back to my move: It was then done by a British company for less money and in less than 5 days. (Nine refrifegator-size boxes full).

I have had similar experiences.  Things from the US can come as soon as 48 hours or as long as 2 months.  It depends a lot on luck. The customs is hit and miss.  Sometimes I pay duty and sometimes not. The same is true if I order from China. Typically, I only buy stuff in the EU.  If you add in the 35% customs duty and then factor the price it is usually about the same as buying in the US.
