WARNING on large wire transfers

Last time I sent a large sum of money to Brasil was about 10 years ago and it was from my corporate account here to my corporate account there. It went thru unhindered.

This week, because we sold our last remaining asset in Canada, our principal residence, it was a different story. The Receita Federal seems not to understand the concept of JOINT BANK ACCOUNTS very well.

House in wife's name only for liability protection, money payable to both of us by my lawyer and documented as such in writing, and the cheque payable to the both of us. Being sent to our joint account @ Santander from our joint account here.

RF won't release the money and wanted to send it back. Should have done the transfer in my wife's name only, as the RE sales contract was in her name, as was the title. This was the problem for them.

All the other documentation, and the fact it was from one joint account to another didn't initially matter. After intervention from our bank, and some more documentation was provided, the funds are now in our account.

Pain in the ass.......
