I saw Numbeo just released their cost of living mid-year update for all the major cities of the world. Here are Bulgaria's: https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/r … region=151

Would those already living in Bulgaria say those numbers are accurate?

No mention of Burgas

janemulberry

No. It's based on figures supplied by users, so if no one has entered stats for Burgas they wont have it. It might come up if you do a search?

I imagine it's probably quite similar to Varna. The numbers are based on city living not village.

Numbeo has Burgas in  their database, but it's similar to Plovdiv and Varna. And they're all slightly cheaper than Sofia, as you'd expect.

"Accurate" is probably not the word I'd use. :-)

That's because I don't think the datasets are very big in some places, and I'm not sure how they pick a specific number (e.g. meal for two 65 lv) when the range is quite wide (e.g. 50-90). In terms of our experience, I think the cheapest meal out (lunch, nice local place, but sharing a Greek Salad and a pizza) is probably around 35-40 now. Fancier restaurant nearby (or even an evening in Kapana, downtown) for dinner, maybe 100-160. So I have a wider range, but it's in the same ballpark.

However, impressionistically, I think Numbeo is pretty good. Plovdiv feels very inexpensive to me, and this is borne out by its place in these rankings.

I can also compare with my experience in Argentina, Cyprus, Spain and going back to the UK. Buenos Aires (and Argentina) is super cheap if you have euros/dollars (due to economic and currency problems and high inflation), and Numbeo shows that's it's lower (and I'm comparing a large capital city with a small regional city). Our trips to Limassol feel expensive to me these days, and Numbeo's city comparison says it's twice as expensive as Plovdiv. Going back to the UK recently felt outrageously expensive, and again Numbeo captures this (nearly 3X).

Good to know!

It looks to me as if overall their numbers are relatively accurate, certainly in terms of comparing cities. But then everyone will experience life in a particular city in a different way and have different expenses.

Difficult to say as a good 80% or more of us (i'm guessing) dont live in Sofia or a city of any great size. We live outside Vratsa in the NW which is the poorest and cheapest area allegedly and everything bar supermarket food and second hand cars is very cheap.

Graham, we'll be living in Dobrich province, in the far north east, also not a wealthy area. I expect prices there will be generally cheaper than the city prices.
