Plovdiv is a very popular city with expatriates, more particularly with students. Find out how to find accommodation there.

Besides Sofia and Varna, Plovdiv is also one of the major Bulgarian cities. It is one of the country's most popular destinations in terms of expatriates, not only for the numerous professional opportunities it provides but also for the presence of its university and many other higher education institutions. Hence, the city provides a range of accommodation options for those wishing to stay there, whether for a long or short term.

You should not have much trouble in finding accommodation according to your needs and budget provided you have inquired on its neighborhoods and on the rental market beforehand.

Plovdiv is above all an ancient city with large paved areas and many shopping streets. It also holds a huge cultural and historical legacy, consisting of architectures dating back to the Middle Age. You will be able to enjoy not only antique buildings in a pleasant environment but also many places of interest which will delight you. The city is well served by the public transport which connects it to the capital city and its surroundings.

Plovdiv is also a dynamic student city. In fact, you are likely to come across foreign students almost everywhere. In the midst of history and culture, the number of shops and boutiques surrounded by street animation will also have a considerable influence on your choice of neighborhood.

Rent prices

Given its tourist aspect, Plovdiv offers accommodation at very affordable rates, unlike the capital city. In fact, during recent years, rent prices for apartments and houses both in urban and rural areas have been decreasing. Therefore, you can rent a studio for an average of 330 leva per month in the city-center and around 240 per month leva in its outskirts.

As regards bigger housing units, like three-bedroom apartments for instance, these will cost an average of 580 leva per month in the city-center and around 391 leva per month in the outskirts.

Find accommodation

To have more chances of finding accommodation according to your criteria more rapidly, it is best to register with a real estate agency. In fact, these have a better knowledge of the local rental market and will be able to advise you and assist you with related procedures. Note, however, that you will have to pay agency fees which are generally equal to a month's rent. You can also find international agencies which can provide you with an English translation of your lease contract.

If you are not yet in the country, you can still view housing offers on general and specialized websites. This should give you a better idea of the types of housing units that are available there and on rent prices. Flat-sharing is also quite widespread in Bulgaria.

Before signing the lease document, make sure that all the housing unit's features are mentioned in the contract, especially if the building is old. In some cases, gas bills can be quite expensive in winter according to the accommodation's surface area. Other fees may also apply. Thus, it is best to inquire on these with the owner.
