finding calm within

salam eleikum everyone,

i'm sure i'm not alone when i say that sometimes i lose that precious feeling of calm within...whether its work, life, stress, people, relationships etc. that knock me off centre. and i really sympathize when i see/hear of someone who is struggling. in those moments, i turn to a poem by max ehrmann and find it brings me back to centre. it may resonate within you too. (and i know there's a line at the end that may offend, but please read between the lines and hear what the author is trying to impart)
salam,

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.

Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore, be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams; it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful.

Strive to be happy.

i'm so glad you liked it I.L.,
and yes, i think an understanding word or gesture between strangers can soothe.
that's what often ignites friendships.
there really are no differences underneath. we all feel emotion.

i'm so glad you liked it! really i am. i was afraid maybe i seemed "preechy" by posting it but that wasn't my intention. i really do think we can comfort and encourage one another especially when we're struggling and not at our best.

like you, i also have favourites lines - but the most relevant for me: do "not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness." that is my achilles mero...my mind can go to places soooo quickly...:( so i need to calm myself down and not lose composure. i'm a work in progress :/

ohhh burnside, you just made me giggle! we're all just mobile antennas pickin up energy/signals all around us!
isn't it funny how we're so nice and calm and centred some days, but others, wham! it's kinetic energy.
so glad you liked it.

merci nelhouni,

you know, i used to meditate every day and i found i was calmer, more in control of my response to life around me and felt in general like a healthier person. so maybe i should resume that practice and go back to reading this every day. used to keep a small copy written in caligraphy on my bathroom mirror so i'd literally read it every morning outloud. think i'll resume that too!
be well,

Dear Katyusha

A very nice topic and one of my interests in life. Please accept my simple additions to what you wrote. Here are five timeless thoughts for attaining peace within

Simplify.
“The simplification of life is one of the steps to inner peace. A persistent simplification will create an inner and outer well-being that places harmony in one’s life.”

Accept.
“Acceptance of others, their looks, their behaviors, their beliefs, bring you an inner peace and tranquility – instead of anger and resentment.”

Forgive.
“Inner peace can be reached only when we practice forgiveness. Forgiveness is letting go of the past, and is therefore the means for correcting our misperceptions.”

Do what you enjoy.
“Never continue in a job you don’t enjoy. If you’re happy in what you’re doing, you’ll like yourself, you’ll have inner peace. And if you have that, along with physical health, you’ll have more success than you could possibly have imagined.”

Be careful with your inner peace.
“Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset.”

ohhhh sweetnovember....you wrote all of the above to me personally didn't you?

i think you must be a scorpio as you've seen into my soul;). (even if you're not a scorpio or don't believe in the zodiac...i still think you're intuitive)

privately, i have been struggling with a personal situation the last 7 days that has me behaving in a manner i do not like. i did lose my inner peace and calm because of dark imaginings and loneliness. i've become immovable in this fear and distrust and  it's going to cost me dearly if i don't let it go.

your words have made an impact on me beyond what you could have imagined.

God bless, and thank you.

Hey Ktyu,

Thanks, you words are really touching. I'm Virgo sign & my personality test indicated that I'm an Intuitive person.

Nowadays we suffer lot of stress around, and could be easily lose our temper and inner peace, however anyone can give up, it's the easiest thing in the world to do. But to hold it together when everyone else would understand if you fell apart, that's true strength.

God bless you
