Retiring in Colombia

Hi James - What it entails you ask?

Well once you decide to make Colombia your home everything will fall into place (pension visa, cedula, health insurance, bank account, etc.) but first things first:

How many times have you visited Colombia and which city, town or municipality have you visited?

First I highly suggest that you visit Cartago, stay a few weeks and see if  the culture/weather/area/climate/things to do fits you.

Consider what you will do with your home (sell?) back home along with household items and cars/boats/etc.

How is your Spanish? This will be probably the biggest factor as to how you will 'fit' and assimilate.

Does your wife have family in Cartgao? What is the draw?

Never buy for at least a few years.

I have been stopping in Cartago for a dozen years on my road trips with my last most recent stop a few months back. I have been everywhere in Colombia, frankly Cartago is at the bottom of the list for selecting where I would want to live.

Keep a tab on the safety issues in Cauca region, much going on and could worsen at a moments notice especially so with the elections in 2026.

Hope this gives you some initial things to consider.

BTW, my first visit to Colombia was a 5 month work assignment to Bogota in November 1990, so 35 year with the past almost 15 years living in a small pueblo outside of Medellin, happy as a clam. I'm originally from Los Angeles, California, where are you relocating from?

I'm very familiar with the country, as I lived and worked (teacher) in Colombia for 5 years...Manizales, Cartagena, and Bogota, and have visited many parts of the country.  My wife and I own a house in her home town of Cartago.

We currently rent a home in Savannah, Georgia and will sell everything (car, furniture, etc.) prior to relocating to Colombia in 2028.

I'm unclear as to what type of visa, if any, I will need, and if a lawyer is necessary.

You will definitely need a visa if you intend to reside in the country.  Do you need a lawyer?  You can do this yourself but you will need to learn even more about Colombia than you do now!

Pay a lawyer to avoid the hassles.  Just do an internet search for

colombia visas for foreigners

...and you will get many hits detailing the types of visas available, the necessary steps in the process, as well as hits directing you to lawyers and visa services who will do most of the bureaucratic procedures for you.  You will most likely want the Residente Permanente visa, the type R, which must be renewed every 5 years.

Just perusing the above website you may understand why many choose to have a lawyer and/or a visa service sort things out for them - I guess the concept of "user friendly" still has not gained any foothold in many Colombian government websites...

Yes you will need a visa . I paid 700 Canadian for my retirement visa. My lawyer is in Cali

You are obviously one of the lucky onesthat have a substantial DB pension in Canada, as maximum CPP plus OAS wont  cut  it for   the 3 salarios minima the eay the exchange rate is  (and  is going) and private personal investments dont qualify for pensionada visa.

Unless you have a conyuge ( marriage/ common law), Rentista, investment or DN visa

Hockey fan??  Me too...Rangers.  I played and coached inline in Bogota when I lived there 2010-2013.  A guy from Montreal started the program probably 20 years ago.
