Immigration Lawyer Needed

Hello to everyone,

A little background about me. I am from New Zealand and have spent about four years living in São Paulo over an 8 year period, coming and going on a tourist visa, except for in 2015 when I had a student visa. On arrival from a recent trip from Peru I was informed however that I would need a visa other than the tourist visa to stay here in Brazil. I am very single and marriage is not really a possibility for me. Like everyone else I am finding it very difficult to get a job here, let alone a sponsor for a work visa. Can anyone indicate an immigration lawyer who speaks English that can help me or a way that I can get a specific visa (volunteer work?) to stay here in Brazil until I find a suitable job?

Immigration lawyers in Brazil are very difficult to come by. And those you come across will almost certainly be useless and a waste of money. I recommend you keep looking around forums like this one for a person who may give you good advice.

The best way to find an attorney, like so many other professional services in Brazil, is through a personal referral. If you've spent so much time in São Paulo over the past several years, you must have a pretty good network of friends: start by asking them. Speak to lawyers that they recommend, and if none of them seem right, ask those lawyers for more referrals.
I don't necessarily agree that Brazilian lawyers are "almost certainly ... a waste of money", but immigration specialists do seem to be rare here. Brazilian law schools, unlike English-speaking ones, categorize Immigration Law as a subset of International Law, and it's not a popular specialty. You may well find a civil law generalist that you like, and s/he will need to bone up on immigration law to help you.

I believe the only option you have left is to get a visa through investment.

As far as lawyers are concerned, the first thing to clear up is which city or state are you currently residing in.

Overall what Raqasu wrote is accurate as far as lawyers are concerned.

Yes, even I have similar suggestion as 'abthree'.
As you lived in Sao Paulo for 8 years, you might have good friends who surely help you in this regard.
I am little surprised, how you lived for 8 years without having a thought on future stay...
